Workweek: Monday-Friday, 12:30pmto8:00pm

The City of Jersey City is seeking to hire an Assistant Violations Clerk to support the Division of Municipal Court. This position will be responsible for collecting fines for traffic infractions in Jersey City's Municipal Court. Also, under the supervision of the Director of the Municipal Court, this position will assist with specialized court clerical work in accordance with established procedures.


Job Duties:
  • Responsible for collecting fees for traffic violations in relation to the acceptance of appearance, waivers of trial, pleas of guilty, payment of fines and costs, and traffic violations.

  • Records the names of traffic violators, their addresses, amounts of fines, and dates of payments.

  • Reviews, checks, and certifies reports, applications, and other documents.

  • Participate in court appearances, if necessary.

  • Answers office calls and respond to inquiries.

  • Maintains important records and files under established procedures.

  • Receives, reviews, and handles complaints.

  • Prepare reports and statements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Required Experience: Two (2) years of experience in clerical work.

Essential Skills:
  • Knowledge of office methods, practices, and equipment used to check, sort, index, store, and file records.

  • Ability to comprehend established office routines and department regulations.

  • Ability to organize assigned clerical work and develop effective work methods.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact in a professional manner at all times.

  • Must have a results-oriented work ethic and a positive, can-do attitude.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

This is a Civil Service Job, and you must eventually pass and qualify for the applicable Civil Service title.
