Could This Be For You?

The Upper Limb Specialist is a highly specialized fabrication role focused exclusively on upper limb prosthetic and/or orthotic devices. This position exercises independent professional judgment to design, fabricate, and optimize complex upper limb devices. The role serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for upper limb technology within the fabrication department and plays a key role in quality systems, clinical collaboration, research and development support, and cross-functional education.

Your Impact

Upper Limb Device Fabrication & Technical Excellence

  • Independently design, fabricate, and deliver complex upper limb prosthetic and orthotic devices, including transradial, transhumeral, partial hand, and shoulder disarticulation systems, from initial work order through final QC.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of upper limb componentry — including myoelectric, body-powered, activity-specific, and hybrid systems — to select, integrate, and optimize device configurations.
  • Interpret complex clinical work orders, cast/scan data, and biomechanical specifications; exercise professional judgment to resolve ambiguities without requiring supervisory input.
  • Fabricate custom sockets using advanced materials and techniques including thermoplastics, composites, laminates applying best practices for fit, function, and durability.
  • Perform quality verification on all completed upper limb devices prior to delivery, ensuring compliance with company standards and applicable regulatory requirements.

Subject Matter Expertise & Clinical Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary in-house SME for upper limb prosthetic and orthotic fabrication; advise clinicians, practitioners, and other fabricators on technical feasibility, material selection, and design alternatives.
  • Partner with clinical staff to review and refine device designs, proactively communicating modifications or corrections needed on work orders while maintaining patient-centric focus.
  • Evaluate and recommend new upper limb components, materials, tools, and fabrication technologies to management; support vendor evaluations and pilot programs.
  • Provide consultation on cases involving unusual anatomy, revision surgeries, or activity-specific demands that fall outside standard fabrication protocols.

Quality Systems & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead quality improvement initiatives within the upper limb fabrication workflow; identify process gaps, perform root cause analyses, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Support the Quality Engineer with Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs), and QC returns specific to upper limb devices.
  • Develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions for upper limb fabrication processes.
  • Champion 5S standards within the upper limb work area; model and sustain a safe, organized, and inspection-ready environment.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and OSHA requirements; proactively identify and escalate safety concerns.

Training, Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer

  • Serve as the primary trainer and technical mentor for fabricators developing upper limb skills; design and deliver structured training aligned to the skills matrix.
  • Assess competency levels of junior and mid-level fabricators in upper limb techniques; provide ongoing coaching and performance feedback to management.
  • Develop and maintain training materials, reference guides, and assessment tools for upper limb fabrication.
  • Participate in department-wide education efforts, including cross-training fabricators in general orthotics and prosthetics as appropriate.

Departmental Leadership & Planning

  • Independently determine methods, materials, and procedures for new or novel upper limb assignments; communicate decisions and rationale effectively to the Fabrication Manager.
  • Assist in workload triage and prioritization for upper limb cases; provide input on scheduling and capacity planning to the Fabrication Manager.
  • Perform ordering, receiving, and inventory management for upper limb-specific components and materials.
  • Model Hanger values in all interactions; foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree.
  • Demonstrated portfolio of complex upper limb device fabrication required; may be assessed through skills matrix evaluation, technical interview, or work sample review.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., ABC, BOC) or coursework in upper limb prosthetics strongly preferred.
  • Must have, or be eligible to obtain, a valid driver’s license and driving record within the standards outlined within Hanger’s Motor Vehicle Safety Policy and Procedures.

Additional Success Factors

  • Expert-level knowledge of upper limb prosthetic and orthotic devices, including anatomy, biomechanics, componentry, fitting principles, and fabrication techniques across all levels of upper limb absence and impairment.
  • Mastery of all fabrication methods applicable to upper limb devices, including socket fabrication, lamination, thermoplastic forming, and electronic/myoelectric component integration.
  • Ability to independently complete the most complex upper limb devices from start to finish using multiple componentry types, with minimal or no supervisory guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent professional judgment on novel or complex fabrication challenges, recommending and implementing solutions autonomously.
  • Advanced understanding of quality management systems including NCRs, CAPAs, and quality control processes within a regulated medical device or healthcare environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to identify root causes of fabrication defects or inefficiencies and develop effective corrective strategies.
  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and fine motor skills; expert use of laboratory tools, precision measurement instruments, and fabrication equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to convey complex technical information to clinical, operational, and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and planning skills; capable of managing multiple complex cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to perform all tasks indicated on the applicable Skills Matrix at the expert level for upper limb devices.
  • Act with integrity in all ways and at all times, remaining honest, transparent, and respectful in all relationships.
  • Keep the patient at the center of everything that you do, building lifelong trust.
  • Foster open collaboration and constructive dialogue with everyone around you.
  • Continuously innovate new solutions, influencing and responding to change.
