The Role and Why It’s Important
The Fast & Fresh Manager sets the standard for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, and profitability across the entire department, presenting the best quality products at a competitive price. In this role, you’ll lead and develop your team, drive sales, manage inventory and pricing, and ensure the department runs efficiently and profitably every day. What You’ll Do
No two days are exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect:
Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one
Maintain a positive attitude and create an atmosphere of friendliness, teamwork, and accountability throughout the department
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate all department employees
Determine department goals with the Store Director and write the department work schedule
Establish a daily work plan, communicate with employees regarding sales and ideas, and handle customer issues promptly
Inspect signage and displays for quality and quantity of merchandise and order product for replenishment
Figure retail pricing, ensure correct pricing, and ensure pricing is competitive in the market area
Extend and post invoices and oversee department bookkeeping procedures
Analyze weekly and monthly sales and trends, compare to actuals, prepare ad projections, and write ads
Conduct department inventory and plan displays, promotions, and pre-orders
Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures are maintained to guarantee freshness and control shrink
Understand and troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance is performed
Fill displays, work in the sales area, unload trucks, check in delivered merchandise, and place product in appropriate storage areas
Attend meetings and seminars and participate in continuing education
Handle confidential information including employee compensation, monthly results, inventory reports, sales and profit data, and warehouse pricing with discretion
Adhere to all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines
Report to work when scheduled and work the expected number of hours
Your Skills
Solve practical problems and interpret instructions across a variety of situations with limited standardization
Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages accurately
File, post, and organize materials; copy data accurately between records; and guide people with clear direction
Lead and develop a team while building a collaborative, customer-focused department culture
Reporting Relationships
Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home
Direct Reports: Fast & Fresh Employees
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent experience required; over one year of related work experience preferred
Physical Requirements
Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance
Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods
Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)
Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods
Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product
Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor
Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing
Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise
Working Environment
This is a fast-paced role performed both inside the store and outside at the fuel area. You will have frequent exposure to temperature extremes and dampness, with possible equipment movement hazards and exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
