Description

The QD group is looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work on advances in controlling the emission properties of organic light-emitting diodes using nanoparticles embedded within the device. The work combines advanced nanofabrication methods, such as electron-beam lithography and OLED fabrication via evaporation and solution-processing with sophisticated characterization methods such as Fourier plane imaging. The project has a concurrent goal to commercialize the results of the project.

Your role and goals

The successful candidate is expected to develop novel nanoparticle array geometries for improved OLED device performance.  The tasks include design, fabrication and experimental characterisation of the OLED devices. The fabrication utilizes wide departmental infrastructures and a state-of-the-art cleanroom, Micronova, and characterization is carried out in the QD group's optics lab with advanced experimental instruments. We are searching for a Postdoctoral Researcher with strong hands-on experimental skills and a deep understanding of organic electronics and nanophotonics.

The work is done in close collaboration with theorists of the group, who study the nanostructures and device optimization using simulations. The goal is to develop precise control of specific emission properties such as polarization, color, and angular distribution while simultaneously extracting lossy modes of the devices and to gain advanced understanding of the system.  We aim to commercialize the results of this research with a focus on significantly increasing the efficiency of OLEDs while simultaneously offering precise control over the emission properties.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for a bright and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with an excellent record. Hands-on experience in nano- and OLED fabrication, characterization and electronics is required. The applicant should hold (or expect soon) a PhD degree in a suitable field. Good command of English (both verbal and written) and demonstrated ability to disseminate scientific results are mandatory requirements for the position. Finnish language is not required. Applicants must be motivated to conduct research at the highest international level.

What we offer

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary ranges for a postdoc from 4229€ to 4649€ per month, depending on previous experience, and the postdoc contract will initially be made for 2 years. The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare. The primary workplace will be the Otaniemi Campus at Aalto University.

You will join the QD group  led by Päivi Törmä at Aalto University. Päivi Törmä is a world-leading expert in nanophotonics and light-matter interactions with pioneering research on room temperature Bose-Einstein condensation and polariton lasing in plasmonic nanoparticle systems. For recent research outputs of Päivi Törmä’s at Google Scholar.  For recent work on the embedded-nanoparticle OLEDs, see a pre-print publication at arXiv.

The research facilities available for the project are outstanding. The Department of Applied Physics has a wide infrastructure of tools and instruments, the largest micro-, nanofabrication research center in the Nordic countries: Micronova. The QD group's advanced optical lab includes a femtosecond laser, two Fourier-plane imaging setups, electrical equipment such as source-meter units, oscilloscopes, and home-built OLED characterization setups. The group is also part of the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials (Qmat) and a member of the Finnish Quantum Institute (Institute Q).

Aalto University has six schools with 16 000 students and 400 professors. It is the largest university in Finland focusing on education and research and technology, science, business, and arts. The QD group is located on the Otaniemi campus in Espoo (10 km from the city center of Helsinki), which is one of the largest hubs of high-tech in Northern Europe.
