This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. This temporary position is located at 4312 District Drive, Raleigh - Wake County with the Department of Health and Human Services.   

 
Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $25.94 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).  
 
Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.  The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed within this vacancy announcement will be used only as management preferences and will be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.  

Management Preferences:  

  • Conducting investigations, examinations, and reports of sudden, unexpected, unnatural, or violent deaths within the Medical Examiner jurisdiction;
  • Determining the OCME's jurisdiction over these cases;
  • Completing all work related to death investigations as required ME Specialists' duties involve, but are not limited to, receiving calls from MEs, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies reporting deaths
  • Must have knowledge and awareness of hazards associated with scene investigations
  • External examinations of decedents include photographing the body, collecting toxicology samples, physically moving the decedent, and removing personal belongings
  • May also collect and release physical evidence to law enforcement, prepare detailed written investigation reports, and possess knowledge of medical terminology and data entry
  • Additionally, must be proficient with current office technology, communicate effectively with agencies and families during stressful situations, and lift medium to heavy weights or hike long distances in outdoor and rural environments
  • The office requires coverage from Sunday to Saturday, 24/7, mainly during nights and weekends, and may include working on holidays

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in science (biology, chemistry, nursing, anthropology, forensic sciences, biochemistry, or related sciences field), or criminal justice from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of medicolegal death investigation experience or specialized (e.g., unidentified decedent, etc.) experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
