About the Role

THE COMPANY

Tracing our roots to 1928, Wellington Management Company, LLP (WMC) is one of the world’s largest independent investment management firms. With over $1 trillion in assets under management, we serve as a trusted adviser to institutional clients and mutual fund sponsors in over 60 countries. Our innovative investment solutions are built on the strength of proprietary, independent research and span nearly all segments of the global capital markets, including equity, fixed income, multi-asset, and alternative strategies. As a private partnership whose sole business is investment management, our long-term views and interests are aligned with those of our clients. We are committed to attracting a talented and diverse workforce, and to fostering an open, collaborative culture of inclusivity because we believe multiple perspectives lead to more informed investment and business decisions. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we welcome people with diverse life experiences, fresh ideas, and specialized subject- matter expertise.

THE POSITION

Wellington Management is seeking two undergraduate co-ops to join its Investment Risk team, with one position in each of the following groups:

  • Multi-Asset and Hedge Fund Risk
  • Fixed Income Risk

The co-ops will support portfolio risk analysis, financial data analysis, and independent risk oversight. Working alongside risk strategists and analysts, they will produce and interpret portfolio risk analytics, investigate market and portfolio developments, and contribute to recurring monitoring and reporting.

These roles offer an opportunity to apply quantitative techniques to real-world portfolios while developing knowledge of financial markets, portfolio construction, and risk management. The co-ops will gain exposure to multi-factor risk models, stress testing, and performance and risk attribution.

They will also contribute to technology and process improvements, including Python-based analytics, automated reporting, and AI-enabled tools. Through this work, the co-ops will collaborate with colleagues across Risk, Analytics, Research, and Technology while strengthening their analytical, technical, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

The co-ops will work closely with Investment Risk strategists and analysts to support portfolio reviews, produce risk analytics, and improve analytical processes. Specific projects and portfolio coverage will vary by group.

Portfolio Risk Analysis and Oversight

  • Produce and review portfolio risk analytics for Investment Risk strategists and analysts.
  • Apply statistical and quantitative techniques to financial data and live portfolios.
  • Develop knowledge of risk estimation, factor exposures, stress testing, scenario analysis, and performance and risk attribution.
  • Identify material changes in portfolio exposures, risk measures, or market conditions for further review.
  • Support research on financial markets, portfolio behavior, risk models, and investment-management practices.
  • Interpret model outputs critically and investigate unusual or potentially significant results.

Data, Technology, and Process Improvement

  • Build reports, dashboards, and analytical tools using Excel, Tableau, Python, and related applications.
  • Help automate recurring reports and analytical workflows in partnership with Technology and other internal teams.
  • Design, prototype, test, and document AI-enabled tools that streamline risk-management processes while maintaining appropriate controls and human oversight.
  • Query, organize, analyze, and visualize portfolio and market data.
  • Monitor data quality and investigate potential data or reporting issues.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of existing processes.

Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Participate in discussions with risk strategists and analysts to learn how risk analytics inform portfolio oversight and decision-making.
  • Communicate analytical findings through written summaries, presentations, and discussions.
  • Collaborate on team projects while managing recurring responsibilities accurately and reliably.
  • Develop an understanding of independent risk management and objective, evidence-based analysis.

Qualifications

We seek candidates with strong analytical ability, intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and an interest in applying quantitative techniques to investment problems.

Successful candidates should have:

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program, preferably in a STEM or other quantitatively oriented field.
  • Relevant coursework in linear algebra, probability and statistics, economics, finance, computer science, data science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze data and draw well-supported conclusions.
  • An interest in financial markets, portfolio management, and investment risk.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accurate, high-quality work.
  • A positive, collegial attitude and a high level of professionalism.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Programming experience, particularly in Python, is a plus. Familiarity with Excel, Tableau, SQL, statistical analysis, data visualization, or generative AI tools is also beneficial.

Please note: These positions include cross-training across functions. The anticipated start date is December 2026 or January 2027.

Only Northeastern University students are eligible for this program.

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications?  That’s ok. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply and welcome a chance to review your background. We are dedicated to building and maintaining a diversified workforce and considering a broad array of candidates with a variety of skill, workplace experiences, and backgrounds.
