Principal Research and Development Engineer, Dispensing

Responsible for the generation, collection, evaluation, selection and development of innovative solutions in anticipation of trends or latent market needs. Develops new concept from initial design to market release. Writes proposals for existing clients to achieve new deliverables within an existing phase or as part of existing efforts. May assist with creation of product roadmap and defining user experiences by conducting research, analyzing the market and engaging key stakeholders.

As a member of our global Product Innovation team for dispensing, the Principal Research and Development Engineer initiates the design, development, execution and implementation technical investigations. A successful Principal Research and Development Engineer applies principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems resulting in a healthy product development pipeline.  Assignments involve problems of diverse and complex scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

Role and Responsibilities

• Investigates the feasibility of technical approaches by applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products. 
• Plans and executes laboratory experiments. 
• Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. Contributes to scientific literature and conferences. 
• Participate in the development and strategy of patent applications. 
• May coordinate interdepartmental and global research efforts.
• Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. 
• Regularly interacts with executives and/or top customers promoting and demonstrating Nordson’s technical knowledge
• Coordinates with Growth and Strategy team to ensure healthy product development pipeline
• May lead projects of large scope
• Other duties may be assigned as required

Skills and Qualifications

• Requires a Doctoral degree or a Masters degree with more than ten years of related experience.
• Must have a wide range of experience using professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issue in creative and effective ways. 
• Must have solid fundamental knowledge in physical sciences and engineering disciplines.
• Practical experience with fluid dynamics, machine design, machine learning, and/or design of experiments a plus.
• Deal with variety of abstract and concrete variables
• Read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents
• Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community
• Author speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
• Effectively present complex information to top management, executives and public groups
• Comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra and statistical theory
• Work with concepts such as limits, rings?, quadratic and differential equations and proofs of theorems
• Deal with non-verbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc) in difficult phases
