Maintenance Technician

Job Purpose:

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for providing maintenance support within a high-volume manufacturing environment to ensure equipment reliability, operational efficiency, safety compliance, and minimal production downtime. The role focuses on preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, technical support, and maintaining food safety and quality standards. .

Responsibilities:

  • Provide onsite maintenance support within a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and perform maintenance activities such as lubrication, cleaning, filter changes, and alignments.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on production equipment to ensure operational availability, efficiency, and quality standards.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities support food-safe manufacturing practices.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, including equipment hours, spare parts used, and completed work.
  • Ensure compliance with FSMS, AMS, and all relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and fault finding on equipment breakdowns.
  • Provide technical insight and effective repair solutions for maintenance issues.
  • Respond to production alarms, equipment breakdowns, and maintenance requests.
  • Complete scheduled preventative maintenance tasks efficiently to minimize downtime.
  • Follow all maintenance safety protocols, including LOTO, 5S, and Arc Flash procedures.
  • Support equipment reliability, uptime, and maintenance planning activities.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting and problem-solving support.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and reporting.
  • Identify and support process improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with operational teams to support production targets and reduce operational risks.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, quality, and occupational health and safety standards.

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal – Fitter, Electrician, or Millwright).
  • Alternatively, a relevant Technical Diploma (NQF Level 4, N4–N6, or National Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance within a team environment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, PLC systems, electrical systems, and facility maintenance.
  • OSHA knowledge and compliance experience.
  • Mechanical and electrical maintenance experience.
  • Understanding of motors, pumps, and control systems.
  • Basic plumbing and HVAC knowledge.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and hand/power tools.
  • Experience with CMMS systems or manual job card systems.
  • Knowledge of HACCP, food safety, hygiene, and FSSC 22000 standards.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Attention to detail and analytical thinking.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within a team environment.
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving abilities.
