Overview

Laboratory technicians are non-professional personnel with training in areas of the clinical laboratory  useful to the overall efficiency  and  smooth  operation  of the laboratory.   These  areas  include:  phlebotomy,  preparation  of send  out tests, answering the telephone, and assisting in the chemistry, hematology, and microbiology areas of the laboratory. The purpose of the job description is to provide information on how this useful assistance can be given. In order to qualify for this position, one must be able to work independently  all the requirements as described for a Laboratory Assistant.  This person should be versatile in all aspect of the laboratory as well as a team player to assist in not only performing, but coordinating the duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant in order to relieve the Clinical Laboratory Scientist the responsibilities of the phlebotomy  and processing area, which  includes  the send out and microbiology set-ups.   This person must have an extensive computer and LIS capability to manage and troubleshoot any problems in the processing area as well as the billing aspect.  This person needs to be able to demonstrate  proficiency  in assisting and gaining the confidence of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist to perform the designated automated instruments.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

  • High school education or its equivalent  experience (An AA or Bachelor's degree is preferred.)
  • Two years of experience as a phlebotomist.
  • Certified for venipuncture and skin puncture CPT.
  • Be able to communicate well in English both in writing and verbally.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a clinical laboratory with at least two years of experience as a Laboratory Technician a lead laboratory assistant, and or a Lab Assistant Supervisor, or show equivalent experience.
  • Have at least two years of LIS experience  and computer knowledge,  or show proficiency.
  • Have good organizational skills.
  • Have some experience with the operation of any automated chemistry, hematology,  or microbiology  experience
  • Work well under supervision and in times of stress.
  • BCLS Card (AHA) within 30 days of hire and maintain.

    Responsibilities

    National Patient Safety Goal #1: Accurate Patient ID. Always verifies the name and MR number of the patient before collecting the specimen or performing the test.

    Always greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and calling the patient by name.

    Always explains to the patient the procedure they are about to do.

    Thoroughly cleans the patient's skin in the area where the blood is to be drawn.

    Always performs the venipuncture/skin puncture accurately with rarely a need to re-stick the patient.

    National Patient Safety Goal #1: Accurate Patient ID. Always accurately labels the tube of blood and places the time and their initials on the label.

    Always properly disposes of used sharps immediately after use.

    Always maintains their tray in a sanitary manner and properly supplied condition at all times.

    Always orders the correct test and completely and accurately completes the requisition for reference laboratories.

    Always uses ethical judgment and technical skill within the policies and legal guidelines of the department and the Garfield Medical Center.

    Always maintains adequate supplies.

    Always communicates concerns and problems accurately to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.

    Seeks guidance and direction, as necessary, for         Performance of duties.

    Responds to changes in scheduling in view of admissions, STATS, ER, OP, and timed testing.

    Always attempts to understand patient needs and respond accordingly.

    Always follows the proper procedure for blood culture collections.

    Always notifies the nursing staff of a failure to collect a specimen.

    Always rejects any samples that are inappropriate for testing and informs nursing of the proper steps for resolution of sample collection.

    All communications regarding rejected samples, results called to the nurses, or tests being canceled are documented in the LIS.

    Demonstrates a willingness to assist co-workers in the completion of daily tasks or special projects.

    Always answers the telephone according to the Medical Center's policy.  Answers in a clear, concise, and in a courteous manner with respect for confidentiality.

    Always transfers telephone calls to proper personnel and relays proper messages; which includes, when necessary, the name and company of the person calling.

    National Patient Safety Goal # 13 Encourage patient's involvement in their care as a patient safety strategy.  Always greets patients in a courteous manner and responds to patients with concern and positive interpersonal skills.

    Respects, at all times, the confidentiality of patient records and uses complete discretion when discussing patient matters.

    Always uses available work time to complete all required tasks within established time frames or schedules.

    Always completes special projects and assignments in an accurate, efficient, and thorough manner.

    Always completes any work left from previous shift within a reasonable time to avoid delay of any patient treatment.

    When shift is near completion, always ensures that specimens have been located and problems resolved.

    Always accommodates and responds to STAT requests.

    Organizes work so that in the time that is available all STATS and routine pick-ups can be accommodated.

    Always checks outstanding orders in the LIS to ensure that all patients have had their blood drawn.

    Uses order entry questions in the LIS to set up microbiology.

    Returns promptly from errands, coffee breaks, and meals.

    Always uses extra time efficiently and productively on other required duties or assists in other departments.

    Always observes the hospital dress code and wears hospital identification badge at all times.

    Maintains a neat, professional appearance at all times.

    Has a complete understanding of the hospital fire and safety procedures.

    Attends required in-service/orientation education programs and/or hospital meetings.

    Always observes the hospital and department standard operating procedures in precautions for transmission of HIV and HBV and the handling and use of hazardous substances.

    Always observes hospital policies.

    Always maintains work area in an organized, clean and safe manner.

    National Patient Safety Goal #7. Reduce the Risk of Health Care Associated Infections. Always wears required protective clothing.

    Always properly disposes of sharps and glass.

    Performs other duties as assigned.
