About The Father’s Heart Shelter
The Father’s Heart Shelter is an emergency overnight shelter that activates during periods of severe cold weather. Our mission is to provide a safe, warm, and welcoming place for individuals experiencing homelessness to find refuge during dangerous weather conditions.
Position Overview
We are hiring on-call, part-time Shelter Staff to work overnight shifts during inclement weather events (typically when temperatures drop below a set threshold). This is a vital role in helping us protect the most vulnerable members of our community during extreme weather.
Shifts are only activated during cold weather alerts, and staff will be contacted ahead of time with notice to report for duty.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome and check in guests at shelter intake
- Monitor guest safety and maintain a calm, respectful environment
- Assist with distributing meals, snacks, and other supplies
- Perform regular walk-throughs to ensure safety and cleanliness
- De-escalate conflicts using trauma-informed and compassionate approaches
- Enforce basic shelter guidelines with dignity and respect
- Communicate any issues or emergencies to supervisors promptly
Additional Information
- Shifts are overnight, typically 8-10 hours depending on shelter needs
- Shelter opens only during cold weather emergencies (defined by local guidelines)
- Staff will be part of an on-call roster and notified when shifts are needed
- All training provided

Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older
- Reliable and able to report for overnight shifts on short notice during cold weather
- Ability to remain awake and alert for entire shift
- Strong interpersonal skills and a calm, compassionate demeanor
- Experience working with vulnerable populations preferred
- Training in de-escalation, CPR/First Aid, or shelter work is a plus (but not required)
