Position Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Emergency Department Tech will provide patient and family-centered care as a member of the health care team.

Where appropriate they are responsible for preparing the patient and environment for the visit and/or procedure. Emergency Department Technicians are responsible for maintaining non-pharmaceutical supplies and equipment. The Emergency Department Technician assumes a range of patient care responsibilities dealing with the physical and emotional aspects of department-specific patient age groups. Emergency Department Technicians are supervised by licensed nursing personnel.

Excellence in practice includes outstanding customer service with internal and external customers, demonstrating initiative, flexibility and proactivity based on the specific, evolving needs of the department.

What You'll Do:

• Ensure that all equipment and instruments are available for emergencies.

• Accurately take and record vital signs, intake & output as ordered, height and weight, and in a timely manner.

• Report abnormalities in vital signs, IV issues, or changes in patient condition to the RN promptly.

• Department-specific POCT, such as glucometers, urine dipsticks, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, and others as requested.

• Escort patients to assigned rooms, help them change into gowns, and prepare them for physical assessments.

• Performs 12-lead EKG and sets up for cardiac monitoring.

• Performs CPR within the scope of practice, as well as participates in Rapid responses in the health center.

• Performs venipuncture

• Blood specimen collection

• Obtain stool and urine specimens as directed.

• Assists with patient transfers to/from chairs, stretchers, wheelchairs, and exam tables. Safely transports/escorts patients to other departments as indicated.

• Change bed linens and clean ED rooms, preparing each for the next patient.

• Stock exam and utility rooms, and maintain supplies and forms at department-specific par levels. Places supply orders as requested.

• Greet, direct, and assist patients, visitors, and hospital personnel arriving at or calling the Emergency Department

• Collect, label, and submit documents for scanning and/or submission to medical records.

• Answer phones courteously, record and deliver messages accurately, and serve as a communication hub during emergencies.

• Escort patients to assigned rooms, help them change into gowns, and prepare them for physical assessments.

• Follow Nursing policies and procedures, including infection control and isolation protocols, while acting within the scope of practice

• Reports on delays in supply orders, safety, and equipment problems.

• Support licensed personnel with patient transfers and discharges as needed.

• Administer vaccinations within the scope of practice.

• Applies splints as directed by a licensed medical provider.

• Understands and complies with policies regarding dress code, including ID badge, cell phone use, attendance, and food and beverage restrictions in patient care areas.

• Assists in Patient Safety Observation for behavioral health-related issues.

• Successfully completes department-specific annual waived testing competencies per Lab requirements.

EDUCATION:

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Graduated from a Certified Emergency Department Technician, Medical Assistant, or Nursing Assistant Program.
• BLS required.
• Bilingual skills preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

• 2 years of certified ED Tech, MA, CNA, or equivalent experience required
• A healthcare background is also preferred.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally. Familiarity with the use of a personal computer in a Windows environment is preferred.

Hourly Rate:

Starts at $24.15 and goes up to $36.50 based on years of experience.
