Description
Great Lakes Energy is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled GIS Mapping Technician to help maintain and improve the geographic information systems that support our electric and fiber operations. In this role, you'll manage and update critical mapping data, process construction and as-built information, support GIS users across the organization, and help ensure the accuracy of system records used for planning, operations, and member service. You'll work closely with engineering, operations, and field personnel to maintain reliable mapping information, perform quality control reviews, and identify opportunities to improve data management processes. Your work will play an important role in supporting the safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of electric and communications services to the communities we serve. This position is based in our Boyne City office and follows a standard weekday schedule.
Who We Are
For over 85 years, Great Lakes Energy has powered rural communities across 26 counties in western and northern Michigan. As the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the state's largest member-owned power company, we serve over 128,000 meters with pride. Beyond delivering reliable electricity, we are leaders in advanced fiber technology through Truestream, our communication solutions subsidiary.
At Great Lakes Energy, we prioritize enriching the lives of our community members and employees. With over 300 team members, we're more than just colleagues, we're a close-knit family, united by a shared vision of growth, innovation, and community service.
A Day in the Life of a GIS Mapping Technician
As a GIS Mapping Technician, your day may begin by reviewing electric and fiber construction work orders and processing as-built information into the Geographic Information System (GIS). You'll verify data accuracy, maintain mapping records, and ensure GIS databases remain aligned with company standards and operational requirements.
Throughout the day, you'll interpret construction and engineering documents, update GIS and Customer Information System (CIS) records, and collaborate with engineers, field personnel, and other departments to maintain accurate mapping information. You'll assist users with GIS applications, troubleshoot mapping issues, and help identify opportunities to improve data collection and automation processes.
When questions arise regarding electric distribution or fiber facilities, you'll provide technical support and information to both technical and non-technical users. You may also conduct field verification activities to confirm facility locations and ensure mapping accuracy.
Before the day ends, you may complete quality control reviews, develop GIS datasets, coordinate database updates, respond to user requests, and research new GIS technologies and best practices.

You're a detail-oriented and analytical professional who enjoys working with data, technology, and systems that support critical utility operations. You take pride in maintaining accurate records and delivering high-quality work that others can rely on.
You thrive in an environment that requires organization, problem-solving, and collaboration. You enjoy learning new technologies and finding ways to improve processes. Whether you're supporting GIS users, updating mapping records, performing quality control reviews, or working with field personnel, you're committed to providing excellent service and maintaining accurate information that supports the cooperative's mission
