How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

The Certified Respiratory Therapist performs basic and advanced therapeutic, diagnostic and life support respiratory care procedures in general and intensive patient care areas, or home care environment.

• Implements patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.

• Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/ family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revises plan according to changes in patient status.

• Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented.

• Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately.

• Assists in performance improvement program by obtaining desired outcomes.

• Assures personal and professional development through participation in educational activities and completion of annual competency validation.

• Performs support functions that are facility specific, such as documentation, charging, filing, scheduling, and orientation of new employees or students. Performs cleaning, preventative maintenance and operational verification of equipment and recognizes equipment malfunction/takes appropriate action. Monitors safety practices in the work environment and reports areas of concern.

• Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patients rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.

• Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.

• Determines and performs within clinical, leadership and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.

• Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.

• Functions as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians.

• Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs.

• May participate in manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines.

• Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.

• Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.

• Provides input into departmental operations and work issues by participating on unit, hospital and/or organization activities.

• May assist with providing educational activities for the respiratory care department, other hospital departments and the community.

• No supervisory responsibilities. 

• Orients new employees and may provide guidance to volunteers, students, support, or contract staff. 

• Communicates with patients, patient’s family members and members of the healthcare team. 

• Accesses, enters and/or updates confidential patient healthcare information as a regular responsibility of the job. 

• Shares patient information as per HIPAA guidelines. 

• Suggests cost containment initiatives in immediate work unit/department. 

• Ability to prioritize workflow. Follows established protocols. 

• Work involves application of basic respiratory knowledge and advanced skills to provide patient care.  Provides direct patient care.  Impact is department/facility specific.  Work is performed in patient care environment and is often fast-paced, requiring use of prioritization skills. 

• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and assesses data reflective of the patient’s status.  Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and provides care according to departmental policies and procedures. 

• Work requires moderate effort for such activities as bending, stretching, stooping, pushing or walking.  Occasional heavy lifting.  Occasional exposure to seasonal unpleasant environmental conditions or cramped workspace.  Occasional exposure to serious injury or environmental hazards to include blood and bodily fluids requiring standard precautions.  May be exposed to infectious diseases, bio-hazardous materials and combative patients.

• Position is deemed ‘emergency personnel’ during emergency weather conditions. Must provide own transportation and travel to other Carilion work sites

What We Require:

Education: Associate degree and/or certification required from a CoARC (Committee on Accreditation of Respiratory Care Education) approved school of respiratory therapy.

Licensure/Certification: Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner by the VA State Board of Medicine.  Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Other: Effective interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills required. Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position. Be able to acquire BLS within 3 months of employment in this position or as determined by department. Some areas may require ACLS, NRP, PALS certification within one year of employment. Active membership in professional organization (AARC) preferred.

Compensation Range:

$27.70 - $41.55

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
