Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a full-time, renewable, non-tenure-track, position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor of Classical Studies in Ancient Greek and Latin languages to start in August 2027. The successful candidate will serve as language program coordinator for the department’s Ancient Greek and Latin programs, with a 4/4 teaching load. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by August 1, 2027.

This is a full-time, nine-month appointment. Teaching duties include Ancient Greek and Latin courses at all levels, as well as contributing to large enrollment classes in ancient Greek, Roman, and Mediterranean culture. The candidate will also oversee the introductory language curricula and coordinate teaching assistants and instructors when necessary.

This is an in-person position. Most University classes are offered face-to-face, and this role requires regular on-campus presence to support high-quality instruction and student learning. Participation in selected departmental or programmatic activities that advance teaching quality and student success is also expected, consistent with the responsibilities of non-tenure track faculty as defined by the academic department.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A terminal degree in Classical Studies (or a closely related field) from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment

• A demonstrated record of exceptional teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate level

• Ability to teach Latin and Classical Greek

 Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to develop effective undergraduate classes

• Ability to teach introductory courses for undergraduate students from all majors

• Experience in mentoring students in independent research

• Excellent potential to collaborate with other program units on campus

• Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant national service organizations

• Evidence of active engagement with an appropriate academic field, which can be demonstrated in a number of ways: research (which may include pedagogical research), publication of pedagogical materials, participation in scholarly organizations, conference or workshop attendance, book reviews, etc
