Job Summary

Inpatient Clinical Specialist, Occupational Therapy
Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Occupational Therapy Department in a key clinical leadership role as an Inpatient Clinical Specialist.
The Clinical Specialist serves as a clinical leader and mentor, supporting the professional growth and ongoing competency development of occupational therapy staff while advancing evidence-based practice across a diverse range of inpatient service lines. This role collaborates closely with departmental and organizational leaders on clinical, operational, and strategic initiatives that support excellence in patient care.
Key responsibilities include:
• Providing mentorship, coaching, and clinical consultation to occupational therapy staff
• Facilitating orientation and onboarding of new clinicians
• Supporting the development and maintenance of clinical competencies and professional growth plans
• Leading and contributing to evidence-based practice initiatives and program development
• Representing Occupational Therapy on departmental, service line, and hospital-wide committees and projects
• Maintaining a reduced clinical caseload to support direct patient care and clinical expertise
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, advanced clinical expertise, excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to professional development and lifelong learning.
This position offers opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration, organizational initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and occupational therapy research.
Our team of 29 occupational therapists provides specialized care across a broad range of practice areas, including:
• Medical, Oncology, Cardiology, Trauma, Orthopedics, Neurology, Burns, Pediatrics and Mental Health


Summary
An advanced practice therapist who demonstrates clinical expertise in the rehab area of their discipline. Acts as a clinical resource with advanced level competencies. Develops and implements advanced level, rehabilitative programs. Therapy treatments in accordance with Standards of Practice, applicable state licensure regulations, and departmental and hospital policies, to a variety of patients ranging from newborn to geriatric in age.

Essential Functions
-Plans, directs, implements and evaluates patient care
-Competent to treat adolescents through elderly in area of specialization; specified specialist competent to treat pediatrics and neonate
-Screens and prioritizes new consults within geographical area for team
-Delegates care and directs Therapists, Therapy Assistants, Therapy Aides, and Therapy Students
-Assesses clinical skill and competence in new staff and other staff as required and implements educational activities
-Provides clinical orientation to staff and updates and maintains clinical orientation manuals
-Contributes to changes in therapy theory and practice
-Develops and disseminates criteria that promote clinical competency.


 

Qualifications

Education
Master's Degree Related Field of Study required or Doctorate Related Field of Study preferred

Licenses and Credentials
Occupational Therapist [State License] - Required

Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Various Issuers preferred

Experience
OT in Healthcare experience 5-7 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of broad range of diagnoses/impairments in content area for individuals requiring therapy intervention.
- Advanced knowledge of supervisory skills, teaching, and evaluation of staff.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to provide compassionate care to patients.
- Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately.
