BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Howard University College of Medicine and Hospital is conducting a research study aimed at improving engagement in care and treatment outcomes for people with opioid use disorder. The study involves connecting patients seeking treatment for opioid use disorder with a Recovery Guide. The Recovery Guide will be a trained team member that educates patients on opioid use disorder, medication for opioid use disorder, and harm reduction strategies. In addition, Recovery Guides will help patients develop plans to achieve goals related to their treatment (such as taking medication daily). The Recovery Guide will work closely with other team members including addiction medicine specialists who will prescribe medications to treat opioid use disorder.
Recovery Guides will receive training before interacting with patients. The Recovery Guide position is a paid, part-time position that will require a 1- to 2-year time commitment. We are currently recruiting for Recovery Guides until the end of November.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Provide manual-guided individual counseling (Recovery Guiding) to participants assigned to BT-MOUD.
Adhere closely to the Recovery Guiding manual in the provision of Recovery Guiding.
Participate in and successfully complete initial training and certification, including workshops and provision of Recovery Guiding under close supervision.
Use active learning approaches to engage participants in learning about opioid use disorder, MOUD with buprenorphine, the role of MOUD in treatment and recovery, and the role of behavioral change in recovery.
Engage participants in developing and implementing behavioral change plans, making use of tools from the Recovery Guiding toolkit to help participants develop short-term, achievable, critical goals and objectives (including, for example, returning for treatment appointments and adhering to prescribed MOUD) and to develop with the participant specific Recovery Plan Agreements to achieve the objectives.
Monitor with the participant the participant’s progress implementing the plans and achieving the objectives and work with the participant to revise the plans as needed to increase success in accomplishing the objectives.
Understand and adhere to confidentiality and privacy protections for participants and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
Participate in all required continuing Recovery Guiding training and initial and ongoing supervision.
Document all Recovery Guiding sessions and all other required documentation.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Experience and ability to work with persons with opioid use disorder (OUD).

Computer literacy to maintain and manage participant records, utilize Zoom, upload documents. Ability to document activities in structured progress notes. Understand and appreciate the impact of structural or social determinants on participants; roots or connections in the community and lived experience may be helpful.
