The Role

Sauce Labs is seeking a customer-focused Senior Sales Engineer / Professional Services Consultant specializing in Playwright and modern application testing. This individual will combine technical pre-sales expertise with hands-on consulting and implementation skills, helping customers evaluate, adopt, and expand automated testing solutions across web and API environments.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable presenting to technical and business stakeholders, developing production-quality test automation, troubleshooting complex customer environments, and translating testing data into actionable insights. This role will serve as a trusted advisor to customers throughout the sales and adoption lifecycle—from technical discovery and proof of concept through implementation, optimization, and enablement.

Key Responsibilities

Sales Engineering/Consultant

  • Lead technical discovery sessions to understand customers’ application architectures, testing practices, delivery pipelines, security requirements, and business objectives.
  • Design and deliver compelling product demonstrations centered on Playwright and modern test automation workflows.
  • Build and manage technical proofs of concept that demonstrate measurable customer value.
  • Translate customer requirements into scalable solution architectures using Sauce Labs capabilities and relevant third-party technologies.
  • Address technical questions, competitive considerations, security concerns, and integration requirements during the sales process.
  • Partner with account executives to develop solution strategies, define success criteria, and communicate technical value.
  • Present recommendations to developers, QA leaders, security teams, and procurement stakeholders.
  • Document customer requirements, technical risks, solution designs, and proof-of-concept outcomes.
  • Design, implement, and optimize Playwright automation frameworks for customer environments.
  • Integrate automated tests with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, and CircleCI.
  • Develop reusable fixtures, page objects, utilities, reporting integrations, and framework standards.
  • Configure test execution for parallelism, cross-browser coverage, retries, tracing, screenshots, video, and failure diagnostics.
  • Diagnose flaky tests, environmental issues, performance bottlenecks, and test-data dependencies.
  • Provide implementation guidance, workshops, and technical training.
  • Contribute to testing governance, coding standards, and quality metrics.
  • Create reusable technical assets, including sample applications, migration playbooks, and best-practice guides.
  • Support post-implementation reviews and recommend improvements based on usage and quality data.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in software development, test automation, quality engineering, sales engineering, solutions architecture, or technical consulting.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Playwright, including its test runner, fixtures, projects, tracing, reporters, parallel execution, and debugging tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in TypeScript or JavaScript.
  • Solid understanding of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, the DOM, HTTP, REST APIs, browser behavior, cookies, sessions, and authentication.
  • Experience designing maintainable end-to-end, integration, API, and component-testing solutions.
  • Ability to write clean, modular, documented, and production-quality code.
  • Experience integrating test automation into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of Git, package management, build tooling, containers, and common developer workflows.
  • Experience troubleshooting distributed systems, networks, proxies, certificates, identity providers, and restricted enterprise environments.
  • Strong knowledge of test strategy, test design, quality risk analysis, and the automation pyramid.
  • Experience managing test data, including data creation, seeding, masking, isolation, cleanup, and environment-specific configuration.
  • Ability to analyze test results and communicate trends involving reliability, flakiness, execution time, coverage, and release risk.
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, written communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple customer engagements and work effectively with limited supervision.

Data Management Requirements

  • Experience designing deterministic and repeatable test-data strategies.
  • Understanding of relational databases, SQL, APIs, and structured data formats such as JSON.
  • Ability to create or validate test data through database queries, APIs, scripts, or service virtualization.
  • Familiarity with synthetic data generation, data masking, data retention, and personally identifiable information controls.
  • Understanding of test-environment isolation and techniques for preventing data collisions during parallel execution.
  • Ability to connect testing telemetry with reporting, observability, or analytics platforms.
  • Awareness of data privacy and security expectations, including GDPR, CCPA, SOC 2, and enterprise data-handling practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Sauce Labs or another cloud-based testing platform.
  • Experience with Selenium, Cypress, WebdriverIO, Appium, or comparable automation technologies.
  • Familiarity with Java, Python, or C# in addition to TypeScript or JavaScript.
  • Experience testing mobile web, native mobile, API, visual, accessibility, or performance requirements.
  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Experience with identity and authentication technologies such as OAuth, OpenID Connect, SAML, and multifactor authentication.
  • Familiarity with observability tools and standards, including OpenTelemetry, logs, metrics, traces, and error monitoring.
  • Experience with visual regression testing, accessibility standards, or performance measurement.
  • Prior customer-facing experience in a SaaS, developer-tools, DevOps, or quality-engineering organization.
  • Experience delivering technical workshops, training programs, or conference presentations.
  • Relevant cloud, testing, security, or agile certifications.

Success Measures

Success in this role may be measured through:

  • Technical win rate and successful completion of proofs of concept.
  • Customer adoption and expansion of Playwright-based testing.
  • Time required for customers to reach their first successful automated execution.
  • Improvements in test reliability, execution time, coverage, and release confidence.
  • Quality and reusability of technical assets and implementation deliverables.
  • Customer satisfaction and stakeholder feedback.
  • Accuracy of solution designs, delivery estimates, and technical recommendations.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technologist who enjoys solving customer problems and can move comfortably between code, architecture, data, and business outcomes. They understand that successful test automation requires more than writing scripts: it depends on sound framework design, reliable test data, disciplined engineering practices, effective diagnostics, and organizational adoption.

They can explain a complex technical issue to an engineering team, summarize its business impact for an executive, and then build a working solution that demonstrates the recommendation.
