Description

Flagship Pioneering is a scientific innovation engine that invents and builds companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps in human health, sustainability, and beyond.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our team of scientists, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and create breakthroughs for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity’s most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE’s “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been named four times to Fast Company’s annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.

Position Overview

Flagship Pioneering is seeking a Senior Manager, Internal Communications to develop and execute internal communications strategies that keep Flagship and our ecosystem employees informed, engaged, and connected to Flagship's mission of inventing and building breakthrough companies that change the world.

This individual contributor role will manage Flagship’s internal communications channels, including creating and distributing clear, compelling content through Flagship’s intranet, newsletters, email and messaging platforms, digital signage, executive communications, and more, while managing editorial calendars that keep messaging timely, coordinated, and audience-focused. Partnering closely with leadership, HR, and functional teams, this individual will bring creativity and high-impact ideas to ensure consistent communication around strategic initiatives, organizational updates, change management, and culture-building efforts.

The ideal candidate combines exceptional writing and storytelling skills with sound judgment, creativity, and strong project management instincts, and is energized by the opportunity to strengthen employee experience through thoughtful, well-executed communications in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute internal communications plans that support Flagship's business and employee-related needs, as well as communications strategies that reach employees across Flagship’s ecosystem of 40+ companies.
  • Create clear, compelling content for internal channels, including company and ecosystem-wide emails, newsletters, digital signage, internal messaging platforms, materials for internal events, executive communications, among others.
  • Manage Flagship’s intranet and develop editorial calendars and communication priorities across internal channels, ensuring timely, coordinated, and audience-focused communications.
  • Partner with leadership, HR, and functional teams to ensure consistent, timely communication around strategic initiatives, organizational updates, and culture-building efforts.
  • Design and manage communication campaigns that support employee engagement, inclusion, onboarding, and internal brand storytelling across multiple formats and platforms.
  • Serve as a trusted communications partner to internal stakeholders, providing guidance and sound judgment on messaging, audience strategy, communication timing, and approaches to complex or sensitive organizational issues.
  • Establish best practices and feedback loops to evaluate the effectiveness of internal communications, leveraging employee feedback, engagement metrics, and other insights to make recommendations and continuously improve tone, messaging, and channel performance.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen the employee experience through storytelling, executive visibility, recognition programs, and two-way communication.
  • Maintain internal communications governance and editorial standards, ensuring content is accurate, on-brand, and aligned with Flagship's voice across all channels.
  • Support crisis and issues communications planning, helping leaders respond to sensitive organizational moments with clarity and care.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Marketing, Human Resources, or a related field or equivalent relevant experience.
  • At least 7 years of progressive experience in internal communications, corporate communications, employee communications, change communications, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing internal communications plans that support organizational priorities, employee engagement, and business initiatives.
  • Strong creative instincts and a willingness to challenge conventional approaches, bringing fresh ideas for how to communicate, engage employees, and tell compelling stories across channels and formats.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to tailor messages for diverse employee audiences and executive stakeholders; meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience managing complex communications projects involving multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, and sensitive or confidential information.
  • Strong understanding of internal communications channels, editorial planning, and employee engagement best practices.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and provide communications guidance to leaders and cross-functional partners.
  • Experience using employee feedback, engagement metrics, and communications analytics to evaluate effectiveness and inform continuous improvement.
  • Ability to juggle multiple initiatives and projects with ease.
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, high-growth organization; life sciences, biotech, or innovation-driven environments preferred but not required.

Behaviors

  • Thrives in ambiguity. Demonstrates comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities evolve quickly, proactively bringing structure, clarity, and creative solutions amid uncertainty.
  • Highly adaptable. Adjusts quickly to changing business needs, shifting seamlessly between strategic thinking and hands-on execution while maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Acts with ownership. Takes initiative, anticipates needs, and follows through with a strong sense of accountability, often operating independently while knowing when to seek input or alignment.
  • Collaborates generously. Builds trusted relationships across diverse teams and functions, welcoming feedback, incorporating different perspectives, and contributing to shared success.
  • Exercises sound judgment. Navigates sensitive or complex organizational issues with discretion, weighing audience, timing, and tone before acting.
  • Balances speed with excellence. Delivers high-quality work under tight timelines, exercising sound judgment about when to iterate, when to perfect, and when to move forward.
  • Communicates with clarity and confidence. Presents ideas clearly, adapts communication for different audiences, and navigates complex conversations with professionalism and good judgment.
  • Embraces pioneering thinking. Approaches challenges with curiosity and creativity, helping employees connect to ideas and initiatives that don't fit conventional categories while remaining grounded in Flagship's culture and values.

At Flagship, we recognize there is no perfect candidate. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. Experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.
