What You’ll Work On
The Senior RF Engineer is responsible for the design, development, verification, and sustaining of wireless RF systems that support Abbott Neuromodulation products. This role provides technical leadership in the development of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication solutions for implantable and external medical devices, including RF circuit design, matching networks, antenna systems, wireless performance optimization, and verification testing. The engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle to deliver innovative, high-quality, and reliable wireless medical device solutions.
- Serves as a technical lead and key contributor in the design and development of RF subsystems for implantable and external neuromodulation products, with a focus on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communications.
- Designs, analyzes, and documents RF circuits, matching networks, antenna systems, and associated wireless architectures to meet performance, power consumption, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
- Performs RF simulation, modeling, and analysis using industry-standard tools to predict and optimize wireless performance across product operating environments.
- Develops and executes RF characterization, verification, and validation test strategies, including conducted and over-the-air (OTA) testing, antenna performance evaluation, coexistence testing, range testing, and wireless protocol verification.
- Collaborates closely with systems, firmware, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, and regulatory teams to integrate wireless technologies into complex medical device platforms.
- Investigates complex RF and wireless communication issues, conducts root cause analysis, and implements corrective actions to support product development and sustaining activities.
- Partners with suppliers, test laboratories, and manufacturing organizations to support component selection, antenna implementation, design for manufacturability, and successful product transfer to production.
- Supports wireless regulatory compliance activities, including FCC, ISED, ETSI, Bluetooth SIG, and other applicable regional and industry requirements.
- Effectively communicates technical information, project status, risks, and recommendations across all levels of the organization to support informed decision-making.
Minium Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in RF, wireless communication, or related engineering field.
- Strong technical experience in RF circuit design, wireless system development, and RF verification testing.
- Experience with RF matching network design, antenna development, and wireless performance optimization.
- Experience with RF measurement equipment such as vector network analyzers (VNA), spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
- Experience developing and executing RF characterization, verification, and validation testing.
- Experience working in a regulated product development environment.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience developing wireless products and RF systems.
- Experience developing Class III medical devices or implantable medical products.
- Experience designing BLE radio architectures and optimizing wireless performance in highly constrained, low-power systems.
- Experience with electromagnetic (EM) simulation, antenna modeling, and RF design tools such as HFSS, CST, or similar platforms.
- Experience with conducted and over-the-air (OTA) wireless testing methodologies.
- Experience troubleshooting RF performance issues related to antenna efficiency, matching, coexistence, interference, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
- Experience in automating measurements using Python, C#, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
- Knowledge of wireless regulatory and certification requirements including FCC, ISED, ETSI, Bluetooth SIG, and EMC standards.
- Experience working with cross-functional product development teams throughout the product lifecycle.
