POSITION SUMMARY:
The Café Attendant supports the daily operations of The Block, Community Café by providing excellent customer service, preparing food and beverages, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for members and guests. In this role, the Café Attendant assists with café operations while helping create a positive environment for teens participating in the café workforce development program. The attendant models professionalism, teamwork, and YMCA core values while supporting teens in learning basic job skills and customer service practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Café Operations
- Prepare and serve food and beverages according to café standards
- Operate the point-of-sale system and process cash and card transactions
- Assist with opening and closing procedures as assigned
- Maintain the cleanliness of the café workspace, equipment, and dining areas
- Restock supplies, food items, and beverages as needed
- Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines at all times
Customer Service
- Provide friendly and welcoming service to YMCA members and guests
- Answer questions about menu items and café offerings
- Address customer concerns or refer issues to leadership when necessary
- Promote a positive and inclusive environment for all visitors
Teen Support & Engagement
- Assist in supporting teens participating in café operations
- Model positive workplace behaviors such as teamwork, communication, and responsibility
- Encourage teens as they learn basic job skills and customer service practices
- Help create a safe and supportive environment where teens feel welcomed and valued
Safety & Compliance
- Follow YMCA safety policies and procedures
- Maintain food safety standards and sanitation practices
- Ensure the café environment remains clean, organized, and safe for staff and guests
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Café Attendant will have the minimum qualifications set forth by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, to include:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Experience in food service, hospitality, or customer service preferred
- ServSafe or Food Manager Certification (or willingness to obtain)
- CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire, provided by the YMCA
- Completes all pre-employment requirements, including background checks
- Adequate speaking, hearing, and writing skills appropriate for interacting with teens and community members
- Ability to build positive, authentic relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position operates in a YMCA café, food service, and community-based environment and regularly interacts with team members, leaders, members, program participants, families, vendors, and other stakeholders. The role requires frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, reaching, lifting, and other physical activity associated with café and food service operations. The position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds, remain standing for extended periods, maintain attention to detail while managing multiple tasks, and physically complete required job-related training or certifications. The role may involve exposure to cleaning supplies, food preparation equipment, temperature variations, wet or slippery surfaces, and other conditions commonly associated with café and food service environments. Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required based on program and organizational needs.

COMPENSATION:
Hourly Range: $13.00 - $15.00
The hourly range provided reflects the YMCA of South Hampton Roads’ good-faith determination of the minimum and maximum starting hourly for this position. In addition to base compensation, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads offers a comprehensive benefits package to eligible employees, including an employer-funded retirement contribution equal to 12% of eligible compensation, health and welfare benefits, paid time off, and other YMCA benefits.
