Description
The Culinary Arts Instructor will instruct middle school and high school-aged students in introductory culinary arts techniques to include food safety, sanitation, menu development, and nutrition. The Culinary Arts Instructor will incorporate core academic concepts into the kitchen including reading and writing skills, math, and critical thinking. The Culinary Arts Instructor will be responsible for maintaining an engaging environment where students learn by doing. Additionally, the Culinary Arts Instructor will work collaboratively with the school administration and teachers to ensure the curriculum is appropriate for the students as well as to support the management of the kitchen. Ideally, students in the program should gain the skills required to gain entry level culinary employment.
Essential Functions
- Management of student/ staff run commercial kitchen.
- Guide students to earning a ServSafe certificate.
- Teach students to maintain a weekly food budget.
- Show students how to order/ shop for adequate supplies while staying within a budget.
- Ensure the kitchen meets Rhode Island Department of Health requirements.
- Pass annual kitchen inspections from the Rhode Island Department of Health.
- Work well with students from various cultural backgrounds, academic, and behavioral challenges.
- Ability to differentiate teaching strategies based on student need/ability.
- Possess or willing to gain Food Safety Manager certification through the Rhode Island Department of Health.
- Other duties as required by administration.
Requirements
Complete and pass all required background checks.
Valid driver’s license and registered/inspected vehicle – Required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with child welfare, behavioral health and juvenile justice populations and systems.
- Culinary school graduate or 3 years working in the food-service industry or similar experience.
- Work well within a team environment.
