Machinery Safety Subject Matter Expert
Location: Remote U.S. or based at a designated Jabil U.S. location
Travel: Up to 50%
As a member of Jabil's Corporate EHS Team, the Global Machinery Safety Subject Matter Expert will provide technical leadership, guidance, and oversight across Jabil facilities worldwide. This role is responsible for advancing machinery safety programs, standards, processes, and governance systems throughout the equipment lifecycle to support Jabil's commitment to zero injuries, zero environmental incidents, and zero compliance non-conformances.
What can you expect to do?
Machinery Safety Program Leadership
- Support global sites in implementing and sustaining Jabil's Machinery Safety Program.
- Drive the integration of machinery safety best practices into manufacturing operations, including change management, preventive and predictive maintenance, equipment governance, and lifecycle management.
- Conduct and support machinery risk assessments to identify hazards associated with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, robotic, and automated systems.
- Recommend and implement effective risk-reduction strategies to achieve acceptable residual risk levels.
- Guide sites in applying the hierarchy of risk reduction:
- Inherently safe design
- Engineering safeguards and controls
- Administrative controls, warnings, and user information
- Provide technical support to divisional EHS teams and site leadership on machinery safety challenges and program implementation.
Compliance & Regulatory Support
- Serve as the corporate authority on machinery safety standards, regulations, and customer requirements.
- Ensure alignment with Jabil machinery safety expectations as well as applicable ANSI, NFPA, ISO, IEC, OSHA, and other regional requirements.
- Support machinery and equipment compliance assessments across global operations.
- Develop reports, recommendations, corrective action plans, and documentation related to machinery safety performance.
Safety Design & Functional Safety
- Participate in design reviews for new and existing machinery, automation systems, and manufacturing equipment.
- Support the development and validation of machine safety concepts and safety-related control systems.
- Advise engineering teams on machine modifications, system integrations, robotic applications, and safe-state requirements during maintenance and personnel intervention.
- Evaluate safeguarding solutions and machine control architectures to ensure achievement of required performance and safety integrity levels.
Training & Technical Consultation
- Provide expert guidance on machinery safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices to engineering, operations, maintenance, and EHS teams.
- Develop and deliver machinery safety training, workshops, and awareness programs for employees at all organizational levels.
- Mentor site teams on machinery risk assessment methodologies and compliance expectations.
Continuous Improvement & Governance
- Monitor developments in global machinery safety regulations, standards, and emerging technologies.
- Participate in corporate EHS audits, assessments, and governance initiatives.
- Review machinery-related incidents, near misses, and trends to identify root causes and implement preventive actions.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen machinery safety performance across the enterprise.
What is the experience needed to be successful in this role?
- Bachelor's degree required in Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), or a related scientific discipline.
- 6-8+ years of experience supporting machinery safety, manufacturing equipment, automation systems, robotics, or industrial machinery within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience conducting machinery risk assessments and implementing risk reduction measures.
- Experience supporting manufacturing operations in the United States and Mexico is required; experience in Europe and Asia is preferred.
- Functional Safety certification strongly preferred, including:
- CMSE (Certified Machinery Safety Expert)
- CMSP (Certified Machinery Safety Professional)
- Similar recognized machinery or functional safety credentials
Machinery Safety Standards
Demonstrated expertise in machinery safety and functional safety standards, including:
- ANSI B11 Series
- ISO 12100
- NFPA 79
- IEC 60204-1
- ANSI/RIA R15.06
- ANSI/RIA R15.08
- ISO 10218
- Applicable OSHA machinery regulations
