Description

Director of Fraud Remote – United States

About the Role

Our client is seeking a Director of Fraud to lead the company’s fraud prevention, detection, and investigation strategy. This is a leadership role responsible for protecting the business from first-party, third-party, synthetic, and internal fraud while enabling growth and maintaining a strong customer experience.

You will set the strategic direction for the fraud function, build and lead a high-performing team, and partner closely with Product, Underwriting, Compliance, Legal, and Operations. The ideal candidate combines deep domain expertise in online lending fraud with the ability to drive operational excellence, automation, and measurable results.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and own the enterprise fraud strategy, including prevention, detection, investigation, and recovery.
  • Establish clear goals, metrics, and reporting that provide visibility into fraud performance and emerging risks for senior leadership.
  • Build, coach, and develop a team of fraud analysts, investigators, and specialists; create scalable structures and career paths.

Fraud Prevention & Detection

  • Design and continuously improve fraud controls across the customer lifecycle, including account opening, underwriting, payments, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to embed fraud prevention into automated underwriting, identity verification, and decisioning systems.
  • Identify and respond to evolving fraud typologies and industry trends, ensuring controls remain effective without creating unnecessary friction.

Operational Excellence & Collaboration

  • Drive process improvements, automation initiatives, and tooling investments that increase detection accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Compliance, Legal, Risk, and business stakeholders to ensure fraud processes align with regulatory expectations and internal policies.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives related to fraud loss forecasting, control testing, and education of business partners on current threats.

Reporting & Governance

  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators, trend analysis, and executive-level reporting.
  • Ensure fraud-related risks are properly identified, measured, monitored, and escalated in accordance with the company’s risk framework.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a quantitative, analytical, or related field preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in financial services, with at least 5 years focused on fraud prevention, detection, or investigations in online lending, consumer credit, payments, or related areas.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams and managing complex fraud initiatives with measurable outcomes.
  • Strong working knowledge of consumer lending regulations and fraud-related obligations (including investigations, case management, SAR considerations, and recovery processes).
  • Proven ability to translate fraud insights into actionable strategy and operational improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and present complex information clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a high-growth fintech or online lending environment.
  • Track record of implementing automation or advanced analytics to improve fraud detection and reduce manual workload.
  • Experience partnering with product and engineering teams on identity, underwriting, or decisioning systems.

This role can be performed remotely within the continental United States, with occasional travel as needed.
