About the Team:
Sam’s Data & Insights team accelerates acquisition, engagement, and retention for Sam’s Club Members. We operate at the intersection of product, marketing, and strategy — using advanced analytics, experimentation, and data science to unlock member-centric growth across the business.
What You'll Do:
As a Senior Data Scientist at Sam’s Club, you will play a pivotal role in enabling data-driven decision-making by designing, executing, and evaluating experiments that shape product strategy and business outcomes. Working at the intersection of product, engineering, and business, you will develop rigorous experimentation frameworks, define meaningful success metrics, and generate actionable insights that improve member experience, digital engagement, merchandising, and operational performance.
- Design, execute, and analyze online controlled experiments (A/B, multivariate, switchback, and quasi-experiments) to evaluate product features and business initiatives.
- Build experimentation frameworks, define success metrics, guardrail metrics, and statistical methodologies to ensure reliable decision-making.
- Apply causal inference techniques to estimate business impact when randomized experiments are not feasible.
- Partner with Product Managers, Engineers, and Business stakeholders to formulate hypotheses, define experiment success criteria, and translate business questions into measurable outcomes.
- Perform statistical analyses using methods such as hypothesis testing, power analysis, regression, Bayesian inference, and sequential testing.
- Develop reusable experimentation tools, dashboards, and analytical workflows to improve experimentation efficiency and governance.
- Communicate experiment results, trade-offs, and recommendations to technical and business audiences, influencing product and business strategy.
What You'll Bring:
- Strong statistical intuition and scientific thinking.
- Ability to independently lead complex experimentation programs from design through recommendation.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Curiosity, ownership, and a passion for using data to drive product innovation and business outcomes.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to mentor peers and elevate experimentation best practices across the organization.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
- 4–8 years of experience in data science, product analytics, or experimentation.
- Strong expertise in experimental design, statistical inference, causal inference, and hypothesis testing.
- Advanced programming skills in Python and SQL.
- Experience with experimentation platforms and statistical analysis libraries such as SciPy, Statsmodels, Pandas, Scikit-learn, or equivalent.
- Experience working with large-scale datasets using Spark, Hive, or Databricks.
- Strong understanding of metrics development, sample size estimation, variance reduction techniques, and experiment diagnostics.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience in retail, e-commerce, membership, or consumer-facing digital products.
- Knowledge of sequential testing, Bayesian experimentation, uplift modeling, and heterogeneous treatment effect estimation.
- Familiarity with product analytics tools and experimentation platforms.
- Exposure to machine learning models for experimentation, personalization, and decision optimization.
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
Technical Skills
- Programming: Python, SQL
- Statistics: Experimental Design, Hypothesis Testing, Bayesian Statistics, Causal Inference, Power Analysis
- Analytics: Regression, Time Series, Metric Design, Product Analytics
- Big Data: Spark, Hive, Databricks
- Visualization: Tableau, Power BI
- Cloud: GCP
Business & Strategic Skills
- Strong business acumen with the ability to connect experimentation outcomes to key business metrics such as member engagement, conversion, retention, revenue, and operational efficiency.
- Ability to identify high-impact business opportunities and prioritize experimentation based on customer and business value.
- Experience partnering with Product, Business, Engineering, and Analytics teams to define measurable objectives and success metrics.
- Strong problem-framing skills, translating ambiguous business questions into testable hypotheses and analytical approaches.
- Ability to influence product strategy and decision-making through clear, data-driven recommendations.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to present complex findings to both technical and executive audiences.
- Experience balancing statistical rigor with business speed, making practical recommendations under uncertainty.
