About Georgia Legal Services Program

Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) is a statewide, nonprofit public interest law firm in Georgia that offers free civil legal services to low-income individuals, fostering equal access to justice and opportunities out of poverty. GLSP is founded on the belief that everyone deserves high-quality legal services regardless of income, age, race, or other demographic factors.

GLSP has10 regional offices that serve Georgians with low incomes living outside metro Atlanta in 154 of the state’s 159 counties. We provide free legal aid across a wide range of civil issues, including family law, housing, access to public benefits, eviction prevention, farmworkers' rights, and educational access.

GLSP employs approximately 200 full-time staff members.

Job Summary

GLSP seeks a senior staff attorney with at least five (5) years of legal experience to work in Valdosta, Georgia and surrounding areas. The Senior Staff Attorney will handle a caseload while growing the program’s presence in the Valdosta area, maintain relationships with the local community, and mentoring assigned staff attorneys and paralegals in their work in conjunction with GLSP’s Albany Regional Office.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Litigate cases in administrative, state, and federal forum including appeals;

· Expand GLSP’s presence in the Valdosta area;

· Build and maintain contacts with community agencies, local client groups, bar associations, and related organizations;

· Prepare and conduct community legal education sessions;

· Manage legal work in the office, including monitoring and controlling workloads in conjunction with the Albany Managing Attorney;

· Supervise employees as additional staff are hired in the office with ongoing feedback and performance reviews;

· Assure office compliance with all LSC regulations, GLSP Policies, and other relevant grant requirements;

· Handle personnel management issues within the office together with the Albany Managing Attorney;

· Demonstrate good judgment, initiative, and willingness to work as a team, including working with Senior Management;

· Function effectively in all the requirements of being a staff attorney;

· Address issues in a timely manner;

· Organize and maintain appropriate documentation of activities;

· Engage in progressively more complex litigation and show creativity in advocacy; and

· Participate in action teams that explore and solve systemic issues affecting clients.

Requirements:

· Graduate of an accredited law school;

· Admission to the Georgia Bar or eligibility to be admitted by motion or provisional licensure;

· Retain active Georgia Bar license;

· Reliable means of transportation for frequent, time-sensitive travel throughout service area; and

· Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.


Requirements

· Demonstrated interest or experience working with clients on poverty law issues and commitment to racial and social justice;

· Proven leadership skills and ability to build effective working relationships inside GLSP and with key individuals, officials, and organizations outside of GLSP;

· Experienced litigator;

· Strong organizational skills and ability to perform tasks necessary to maintain a substantial active caseload of advocacy and litigation;

· Willingness and ability to work as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner;

· Computer literacy, which includes familiarity using email, Microsoft Office, , and other computer programs; familiarity with LegalServer is a plus;

· Ability to work with diverse populations, backgrounds, and perspectives;

· Excellent oral advocacy, research, and writing skills; and

· Attention to detail and self-motivated.

· Salary range $71,441 - $121,540 dependent upon experience and Qualifications.
