Please note: This position may be filled at the Public Health Nurse I level for candidates who do not yet meet the qualifications for Public Health Nurse II.  Employees hired at the Public Health Nurse I level will be promoted to Public Health Nurse II upon successful completion of 12 months of employment and fulfillment of all position requirements.

The hiring salary range for Public Health Nurse I is as follows:
$25.10/hour ($52,208.00/year) - $28.87/hour ($60,049.60/year)




The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs.

Working knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of public health.

Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health.

Knowledge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), treatment follow-up, and patient education.

Ability to provide clear and compassionate STI counseling and education.

Patient-centered education and health promotion skills.

Ability to conduct vision and hearing screenings accurately.

Ability to identify patient needs and escalate concerns appropriately.

Knowledge of available resources and organizations in the community and the ability to coordinate these as needed.

Ability to record accurately the services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions.

Ability to support communicable disease prevention efforts.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.

Ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintain effective working relationships.Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a public health nursing rotation and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area; or

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area assigned.

Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Individuals hired without a rotation through a public health department as part of educational requirement will be required to complete Introduction to the Public Health Nursing course within one year of hire.

A valid Driver's License is required.

Minimum Education and Experience for Public Health Nurse I:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a public health nursing rotation or graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Must be licensed to practice as a Registered nurse in North Carolina by the N.C. Board of Nursing.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

A valid Driver's License is required.Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Conducting sexually transmitted infection (STI) result callbacks and, patient education, counseling, and follow-up to promote treatment compliance and disease prevention.

Completing vision and hearing screenings for pediatric patients to support early identification of potential health concerns and assists the Child Health Enhanced Role Registered Nurse (RN).

Triaging immunization clients prior to scheduled appointments by reviewing records, identifying vaccine needs, and supporting efficient clinic workflow and patient flow.

Supporting preventive healthcare initiatives and contributes to improving community health outcomes through patient education and early intervention services.

Working collaboratively with nursing staff, providers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure quality patient care and continuity of services.

Offers opportunities to work with diverse patient populations in a mission-driven public health environment focused on prevention and wellness.

Provides a variety of responsibilities that allow for professional growth, skill development, and cross-training opportunities.
