Keep the City Moving — Join Our Fleet Team!

The City of San Bernardino is seeking an experienced Equipment Mechanic II to perform advanced maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment.

About the City:
As a future member of our team, you’ll be joining a city with deep roots, cultural diversity, and exciting momentum. Located in the heart of Southern California’s Inland Empire, San Bernardino is the county seat and largest city in San Bernardino County, home to more than 222,000 residents. Its rich history — shaped by Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influences — continues to inspire the city’s evolving identity.

San Bernardino offers access to major transit corridors, natural beauty, and a wide range of housing and lifestyle options. It’s a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose — and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.

About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking a skilled and experienced Equipment Mechanic II to join the Fleet Services Division. This journey-level position performs advanced diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on a diverse fleet of gasoline, diesel, electric, hybrid, and CNG-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a skilled and safety-conscious mechanic with experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of gasoline, diesel, electric, hybrid, and CNG-powered vehicles and equipment. They are detail-oriented, proficient with diagnostic tools and technical manuals, and committed to providing high-quality service while maintaining accurate maintenance records. Strong communication skills, independent judgment, and a customer-focused approach are essential for success in this role.

A Day in the Life:
As an Equipment Mechanic II, no two days are the same. You may begin your morning diagnosing electrical issues on a police vehicle, perform preventive maintenance on heavy construction equipment, rebuild major engine components, repair hydraulic brake systems, or troubleshoot emergency warning and communication systems. Throughout the day, you'll use specialized diagnostic equipment, complete repairs on a variety of City vehicles, maintain accurate maintenance records, and help ensure the City's fleet remains safe, operational, and ready to serve the community.
