Plant Controller

Location & Work Schedule: Initial training will take place in Birmingham, AL. Upon completion of training, the position will transition to our Tuscaloosa, AL location, following a hybrid schedule with three days on-site per week.

 

SUMMARY: The Plant Controller serves as a key financial partner to multiple production facilities, ensuring accurate financial reporting, consistent accounting practices, and effective financial controls across locations. This role utilizes the company's enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, including Tube Mill Software (TMS), to support cost management, inventory control, profitability, and operational efficiency.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Controller Duties and Responsibilities –

1. Perform timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes by preparing supporting workpapers, recording journal entries, and reviewing general ledger activity for accuracy.
2. Prepare plant-level financial statements, profit and loss reports, balance sheet reconciliations, spending summaries, and forecasts.
3. Maintain the plant's cost accounting system, including standard costing, labor and overhead rates, and analysis of production variances.
4. Support plant management by identifying cost-reduction opportunities, improving productivity, and providing financial analysis as needed.
5. Assist in preparing the annual operating budget and periodic forecasts and report on the reasons for variances throughout the year.
6. Monitor inventory valuation, coordinate cycle counts and physical inventories, and review obsolete or slow-moving inventory.
7. Monitor capital expenditures, track project spending, and evaluate return on investment.
8. Design, implement, document, and maintain adequate and effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy.
9. Ensure compliance with GAAP and corporate financial policies and assist with tax and regulatory compliance requirements.
10. Coordinate data collection and provide support for internal and external financial audits.
11. Serve as the point of contact for special projects and financial analysis requested by corporate operations.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Proficiency with personal computers and experience with ERP systems; experience with Tube Mill Software (TMS) is preferred.
2. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Excel.
3. Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present financial information clearly to plant and corporate leadership.
4. Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and meet established deadlines.
5. Ability to oversee decentralized accounting activities and partner effectively with multiple plant managers and corporate leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1. Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field
2. 5- 8 years of relevant accounting and financial management experience.
3. MBA or CPA are desirable but not required.
4. Manufacturing industry experience, including multi-plant financial oversight, preferred.
5. Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, cost accounting, and internal controls.
