POSITION OVERVIEW

BDC is the only bank dedicated exclusively to Canadian entrepreneurs. We support the growth of small and medium-sized businesses across Canada, and your work contributes directly to the success of Canadian businesses.

As a Valuation Specialist, you will lead fair value assessments of private-company equity investments within BDC Capital’s Growth Equity Partners (GEP) and Venture Capital portfolios. You will apply valuation methodologies, assess complex capital structures, collaborate with investment teams, and support accurate financial reporting, governance, and decision-making. At BDC, you can be yourself at work, and we value inclusion, equity, and diversity.

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

  • Lead quarterly and ad hoc fair value assessments of private-company equity investments within GEP and Venture Capital portfolios.
  • Assess complex capital structures, including preferred shares, convertible securities, warrants, options, multiple share classes, and financing rights and preferences.
  • Apply appropriate market, income, transaction, option-pricing, and scenario-based valuation approaches.
  • Analyze company performance, financing rounds, capitalization, liquidity, cash runway, business milestones, and market conditions.
  • Build, review, and validate valuation models, including enterprise-to-equity bridges, sensitivity analyses, option-pricing models, and allocation/waterfall analyses.
  • Challenge key assumptions and provide clear, well-supported valuation recommendations to investment teams, management, valuation committees, and auditors.
  • Support GTC quarterly and ad hoc mark-to-market exercises as required.
  • Conduct portfolio, industry, transaction, and public-market analyses and contribute to improvements in valuation processes, documentation, automation, and reporting.
  • Use AI-enabled productivity tools appropriately for research, documentation, analysis review, and workflow improvements while maintaining confidentiality, professional judgment, and human oversight.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in business/equity valuation, transaction advisory, venture capital, private equity, investment banking, audit, corporate finance, pension funds, or a similar financial institution.
  • Experience performing or reviewing private-company equity valuations, including early-stage, venture-backed, or high-growth businesses.
  • Experience analyzing financing rounds, capitalization tables, shareholder rights, dilution, and complex equity instruments.
  • Experience building, reviewing, or validating financial and valuation models and preparing valuation documentation for financial reporting, governance, audit, or investment purposes.

Technical skills

  • Knowledge of private-company valuation methodologies, including market, income, transaction-based, option-pricing, and scenario-based approaches.
  • Understanding of venture capital and growth equity structures, including liquidation preferences, conversion features, participation rights, anti-dilution provisions, warrants, and options.
  • Solid financial analysis and accounting knowledge.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modelling, sensitivity and scenario analysis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with financial and private-capital data platforms such as Capital IQ and PitchBook.
  • Working knowledge of Venture Capital and Private Equity markets and practices.

  • Bilingual in French and English.

Core competencies

  • Analytical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, and sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to communicate and constructively challenge valuation assumptions and conclusions.
  • Ability to manage multiple deliverables and tight quarterly reporting timelines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with valuation, investment, finance, accounting, and audit teams.

Preferred qualifications

  • CPA or CBV designation, or progress toward a relevant designation.
  • Valuation consulting or transaction advisory experience within an accounting or professional services firm.
  • Experience in venture capital, growth equity, private equity, investment banking, or institutional investing.
