Reports to: Director of Communications

Salary: $52,000-$60,000

Location: This is a hybrid position based out of the Alexandria office.

New Virginia Majority (NVM), Virginia’s leading civic engagement organization, builds power in working-class communities of color across the commonwealth. We organize around issues of racial, economic, and environmental justice year-round through deep community organizing, mass voter mobilization and policy advocacy. New Virginia Majority is seeking a strategic Communications Associate to garner media reach for our departments and hubs in support of our organizing, policy, and political work. Preferably, the candidate is bilingual in Spanish. The Communications Associate will play a vital leadership role in expanding New Virginia Majority’s reach among working class communities across Virginia.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Associate reports to the Communications Director and collaborates across departments to:

 

Communications Strategy 

• Support dissemination of narratives and messaging to guide campaign work 
• Collaborate with other departments to review, and design content, including newsletters, impact reports, legislative agendas, and other documents

 

Press & Media 

• Build and maintain strong relationships with press, social media influencers and editorial boards across our three key media markets, and garner press coverage for the organization
• Assist with pitching stories, op-eds, and press releases to local and statewide media, and publish press materials to our website
• Support media training for staff and members 
• Monitor and analyze news clips and share with team where appropriate

 

Translation (if applicable)

• Translate and review Spanish-language materials including press releases, talking points, and campaign communications
• Occasional on-demand translation of communications to Spanish for staff and members

 

Other responsibilities

• Support local events through capturing photos and story banks
• Attend required meetings and participate in working groups
• Other tasks as assigned

 

Qualifications

• Minimum three years work experience in communications
• Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken) strongly preferred
• Some graphic design experience and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva
• Strong writer and editor 
• Deep understanding of news cycles and reporter relationship-building 
• Experience with collaborating across departments
