The Lead Biomedical Equipment Technician is a senior technical professional responsible for providing day-to-day work leadership and technical guidance to Biomedical Services staff within assigned facilities, specialty areas, programs, or shifts across Beth Israel Lahey Health. The Lead coordinates workload and service activities, serves as a technical escalation resource, promotes service quality and documentation standards, and supports operational performance while remaining distinct from a formal management role unless specific supervisory authority is delegated.The Lead Biomedical Equipment Technician supports staff development through mentoring, onboarding, competency development, and knowledge transfer and works closely with management to ensure effective service delivery, regulatory compliance, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement. The position maintains advanced technical expertise and serves as a key resource during complex equipment issues, operational initiatives, and emergency response activities.
Job Description:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
1. Coordinate day-to-day technician workload, assignments, priorities, service response, and coverage within assigned facilities, programs, shifts, or specialty areas to support operational objectives and customer needs.
2. Serve as a senior technical resource and escalation point for complex, high-risk, and specialty medical equipment, providing advanced troubleshooting, repair, and technical support within demonstrated areas of expertise.
3. Monitor operational performance, including work progress, preventive maintenance completion, service backlog, urgent service requests, customer concerns, and resource utilization, communicating issues and recommendations to management.
4. Mentor and support Biomedical Services staff through onboarding, technical coaching, competency development, cross-training, knowledge transfer, and reinforcement of established service standards and procedures.
5. Provide management with input regarding staff performance, training needs, workload distribution, process adherence, operational concerns, and employee development opportunities while not independently exercising formal personnel-management authority unless specifically delegated.
6. Promote accurate, complete, and timely documentation of service activities, equipment records, and maintenance history within the CMMS and assist in resolving documentation or data-quality issues.
7. Coordinate activities involving external service providers, ensuring appropriate communication, service documentation, access requirements, and follow-up actions in collaboration with management, Vendor Services, and other stakeholders.
8. Lead or coordinate technical work associated with equipment installations, upgrades, conversions, recalls, service campaigns, technology implementations, and other departmental projects and initiatives.
9. Support compliance with Quality Management System, regulatory, accreditation, safety, risk-management, and organizational requirements and assist with implementation of standard work, technical procedures, and process-improvement initiatives.
10. Provide technical leadership and customer support during significant equipment failures, service disruptions, emergency situations, and other events affecting clinical operations, ensuring timely escalation and resolution of issues.
11. Participate in on-call, after-hours, and emergency-response activities as required and coordinate technical response efforts during assigned coverage periods.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics Technology, Military Biomedical Equipment Training, a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and progressively responsible Healthcare Technology Management experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Licensure, Certification & Registration: CBET certification preferred. Other relevant technical or leadership certifications encouraged.
Experience: Seven or more years of progressively responsible biomedical equipment service experience, including demonstrated ability to lead technical work, mentor others, coordinate priorities, and manage dynamic service demands.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Advanced biomedical equipment service and troubleshooting knowledge; strong organization, communication, customer-service, prioritization, and mentoring skills; ability to coordinate work across staff and facilities and to function effectively without formal management authority.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
Dept./Unit-Specific Skills: Technical leadership career path. Daily work coordination, mentoring, service escalation, documentation quality, and operational support without replacing formal Director/manager accountability.
Pay Range:
$47.00 - $63.45The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
