Position Overview
Our focus is simple but meaningful, from our distribution centers to our stores and our offices — every employee of C&S/SpartanNash and their family of companies works to help feed local families, neighbors, and communities. We're currently seeking candidates for two IS internship opportunities (Data Analytics and Data Science) in Edison, NJ (hybrid).
Data Analytics Intern
Responsibilities:
- Assist in daily operations and administrative tasks within the assigned department.
- Support the preparation of presentations, reports, and other documentation.
- Collaborate with team members to improve processes and enhance efficiency.
- Attend meetings, take notes, and contribute ideas and insights.
- Aid in enhancing department tools, templates, and methodologies.
- Gain exposure to and knowledge of department functions.
- Develop positive professional relationships across departments.
- Complete special projects as assigned by your manager.
- Deliver an end-of-internship presentation showcasing completed learning objectives.
- Work in the Data Analytics function within the Enterprise Data & Innovation team, supporting reporting and insights innovation by applying statistics and data science to analytics modernization.
- Assist in automating, streamlining, and standardizing analytics solutions.
- Analyze large retail, wholesale, and supply chain datasets using GCP BigQuery, SQL, and Python (pandas, NumPy, statsmodels, matplotlib), and build reports and dashboards in Power BI and Excel.
- Use version control (Git/GitHub) and notebook environments (Jupyter, Google Colab) to document and share your work.
- Explore generative AI tools (e.g., Gemini) to accelerate data analysis, query writing, and insight summarization.
- Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, Business Intelligence and IS functional teams, and business analytics teams in areas such as procurement, warehouse operations, HR, and Finance.
Data Science Intern
Responsibilities:
- Assist in daily operations and administrative tasks within the assigned department.
- Support the preparation of presentations, reports, and other documentation.
- Collaborate with team members to improve processes and enhance efficiency.
- Attend meetings, take notes, and contribute ideas and insights.
- Aid in enhancing department tools, templates, and methodologies.
- Gain exposure to and knowledge of department functions.
- Develop positive professional relationships across departments.
- Complete special projects as assigned by your manager.
- Deliver an end-of-internship presentation showcasing completed learning objectives.
- Work in the Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning function within the Enterprise Data & Innovation team, assisting in building, training, and testing machine learning models for business problems such as demand forecasting, pricing, and supply chain optimization.
- Conduct data cleaning, preprocessing, feature engineering, and exploratory analysis to support model development, using Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, XGBoost) and SQL.
- Build and evaluate models in GCP Vertex AI (Workbench, Pipelines, Model Registry) and BigQuery ML, and support deployment using Cloud Run and large-scale data processing with Dataproc (PySpark).
- Explore generative AI and LLM tools (e.g., Gemini on Vertex AI, retrieval-augmented generation) to prototype AI-assisted analytics use cases.
- Use Git/GitHub and notebook environments (Jupyter, Colab) for reproducible, well-documented work.
- Collaborate with data engineers, senior data scientists, and BI / Data Analytics teams to deliver end-to-end data solutions.
We’re searching for interns who are:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at an accredited university
- In good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing at the time of the internship
- Majoring in Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field
- Proficient with Excel (required)
- Proficient with SQL and Python (required)
- Familiar with a BI tool such as Power BI (preferred)
- Familiar with Google’s suite of products and BigQuery (preferred)
- A strong written and verbal communicator
- Able to think creatively and solve problems
- Able to work both collaboratively and independently
- Organized and detail-oriented
