SUMMARY


The High School Success Advisor is a student mentor and coach, assisting high school students in linking academic, personal and professional goals to ensure persistence to graduation and successful transition to-and-through college, a technical development program or entry into the workforce. This role will specifically support and lead the program Leaders in Training (LIT) at our Smythe Clubhouse. Leaders in Training is a clubhouse-based leadership program focusing on four core pillars: college and career readiness, leadership and character, community and civic engagement and holistic health. Our students receive support with college applications, financial aid forms, and college selection. They develop social emotional skills, including methods to ask for help, access resources, and build support networks. They also contribute to the community and learn how to be engaged civic leaders.


The High School Success Advisor serves as a liaison to services and resources on high school campuses and at Boys & Girls Clubs as well as the broader community including business, healthcare, education and non-profit organizations.

Requirements

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead student outreach and recruitment efforts, including marketing and promotional materials to recruit and retain youth
  • Lead weekly workshops for LIT students
  • Assist with Youth of the Year recruiting, retreats, and other support
  • Attend BGCSV events with LIT students
  • Ensure that student and program data is entered into the appropriate tracking system
  • Develop and implement innovative programs and activities that prepare youth for secondary and post-secondary success
  • Be a resource and guide individuals and groups of students to develop education plans and career awareness
  • Serve as a resource for students to connect with off-campus health and wellness services
  • Develop and maintain diverse partnerships that provide opportunities to students, including business, healthcare, education, and non-profit organizations
  • Build and maintain relationships with youth and their families, partner high schools, staff, counselors, volunteers, and other partners

Essential Knowledge

  • Understanding of the developmental needs of young people, particularly teens ages 13-18
  •  Including but not limited to cultural competence and familiarity with youth development tools and resources across the Silicon Valley
  • Knowledge of budget control and management
  • Knowledge of college attendance process, including but not limited to application, financial aid, major exploration, and other resources
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote projects; work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures and interpret data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate the use of appropriate and practical techniques to encourage community and parent involvement
  • Ability to develop long-term goals and objectives
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Ability to navigate high school, college application, and financial aid systems
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Negative TB test
  • Background check clearance
  • Clean driving record with reliable transportation

Nice-to-haves:

  • 3+ years of experience working with high school-aged youth
  • Strong presentation skills
  • CPR and First Aid Certification within three months of hire
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish is strongly preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent standing and walking
  • Ability to speak and hear
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds of school supplies or recreational equipment waist height)
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Purchase supplies and equipment.
  •  Work with staff on special events
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Teens and Postsecondary Success

WORKING CONDITIONS:Boys & Girls Clubs are often stressful, busy, and noisy environments. The Advisor is expected to work in situations where many member and facilities-related activities take place at the same time
