Job Description
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer specializing in Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) to support the planning, design, and implementation of airside electrical systems for airport development and modernization projects. The role focuses on the design and integration of AGL systems in accordance with ICAO, FAA, EASA, and applicable national aviation standards to ensure the highest levels of airfield safety and operational efficiency.
The successful candidate will lead or support the development of AGL designs throughout all project phases, including concept, preliminary, detailed design, construction support, testing, and commissioning. The engineer will be responsible for runway, taxiway, apron, stop bar, guidance signage, airfield lighting control and monitoring systems (ALCMS), constant current regulator (CCR) systems, airfield power distribution networks, and associated infrastructure.
Working closely with airport planners, airfield engineers, civil designers, air traffic operations stakeholders, and multidisciplinary project teams, the candidate will ensure seamless integration of AGL systems with broader airport infrastructure while maintaining compliance with aviation safety standards, operational requirements, and project objectives.
Key areas of responsibility include AGL system planning and design, photometric performance assessments, circuit design, CCR selection, ALCMS integration, electrical calculations, cable routing, airfield electrical infrastructure, design reviews, construction support, and commissioning activities for airside facilities.
Your Role
- Develop and deliver airfield ground lighting designs for runways, taxiways, aprons, helipads, holding positions, stop bars, and associated airside facilities.
- Prepare concept, preliminary, and detailed engineering designs in compliance with ICAO, FAA, EASA, and applicable national aviation standards, ensuring operational safety, reliability, and maintainability.
- Design and coordinate the electrical infrastructure supporting AGL systems, including Constant Current Regulators (CCRs), series circuits, transformers, field lighting equipment, cable networks, duct banks, manholes, earthing systems, and associated power distribution systems.
- Perform electrical calculations and equipment sizing to ensure system performance and resilience.
- Lead the design and integration of Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring Systems (ALCMS), ensuring seamless interface with airport operational systems, control towers, and maintenance platforms.
- Support automation, redundancy, monitoring, diagnostics, and cybersecurity considerations where applicable.
- Undertake engineering assessments and technical studies including load calculations, voltage drop analysis, circuit design, fault level studies, redundancy analysis, equipment selection, and life-cycle evaluations.
- Conduct photometric assessments and ensure compliance with prescribed airfield lighting performance requirements.
- Coordinate closely with airport planners, airfield engineers, civil engineers, architects, ICT specialists, and other design disciplines to ensure successful integration of AGL systems within wider airport infrastructure projects.
- Resolve design interfaces and support the development of optimized engineering solutions.
- Prepare and review engineering reports, specifications, design calculations, drawings, layouts, schedules, bills of quantities, and tender documentation.
- Ensure all deliverables meet project quality standards, client requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant aviation regulations, airport authority requirements, electrical codes, and industry best practices.
- Stay informed of evolving industry standards and emerging technologies related to airport electrical and airfield lighting systems.
- Support airport expansion, rehabilitation, and modernization projects through assessment of existing AGL assets, condition surveys, upgrade recommendations, and development of asset renewal strategies aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
- Engage with airport operators, aviation authorities, air traffic management stakeholders, contractors, and clients to address technical requirements, support project delivery, and provide subject matter expertise on AGL systems throughout the project lifecycle.
- Promote the adoption of innovative technologies, sustainable design practices, and digital engineering tools to improve system reliability, operational efficiency, and long-term value for airport infrastructure projects.
- Undertake design of a variety of electrical design elements i.e. LV Distribution, Earthing & Bonding, Lighting, Cable management system and Building power designs.
- Carry out Electrical calculations using Dialux, Amtech, Relux, and other equivalent software.
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience of the use of BS7671, BS 50122, BS5266 and BS5839.
- Assist the Team leader/Senior Engineer in presenting design solutions in meeting with clients and contractors.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, master’s degree in electrical Power Systems or Airport Infrastructure.
- Previous electrical engineering or design role within Engineering consultancy.
- 5+ years of experience in electrical design. Experience in commercial, industrial, infrastructure, or airport projects.
- Strong hands-on experience with Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit MEP. Awareness of Civil 3D for coordination purposes.
- Good understanding of Electrical supply and electrical systems.
- Utility coordination and underground services.
- BIM workflows and data management.
- Experience working on UK / Middle East / International aviation projects is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative BIM team.
- Knowledge of ACC / ProjectWise, Navisworks, and clash detection workflows.
