Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks a dynamic candidate for an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of sports media and communication to engage in research, teaching, and leadership related to its new Sports Media and Communication (SMC) major. The SMC program instructs students with hands-on training in creating content using industry-standard and emerging digital tools, including areas such as broadcasting, writing, social media and public relations. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. (or relevant terminal degree) by the time of appointment or a master’s degree with at least five years of full-time professional experience. Preferred qualifications include relevant teaching experience and demonstrated ability, commensurate with rank, to produce nationally/internationally recognized, peer-reviewed scholarship or recognized creative work. As a student-centered, research-intensive (R1) university of science and technology in the Big 12, ISU offers high-level opportunities for collaboration and scholarly analysis of sports communication. This position is a full-time (9-month) appointment starting August 16, 2027.
The adherence to programmatic goals and curriculum objectives is required, as the school is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC).
Required Minimum Qualifications:
M.S. in journalism, advertising, public relations, or related field and five years of relevant, full-time professional experience, or
Ph.D. or relevant terminal degree in journalism, advertising, public relations, or related field.
Additionally, for Associate/Full rank:
Associate/Full Professor candidates must also meet the university standards for appointment to the rank, including a record of peer-reviewed scholarship or juried creative works in the candidate’s area of expertise commensurate with rank.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated teaching excellence in higher education
Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of courses in sports media and/or advertising, digital storytelling, journalism, or public relations.
Demonstrated ability, commensurate with rank, to produce nationally/internationally recognized, peer-reviewed scholarship or recognized creative work
Professional experience beyond the required amount related to sports media and communication in journalism, advertising, public relations, or related field.
