Mountain Recreation is looking for experienced and dependable officials to support our Adult Hockey League at the Eagle Pool & Ice Rink. Hockey Officials are responsible for managing game play, applying and enforcing league rules, promoting participant safety, and helping create a fair, respectful, and enjoyable environment for players. Officials must be comfortable making independent decisions, communicating clearly with participants, and managing competitive game situations professionally. Prior hockey officiating experience is highly preferred, and applicable officiating certification may be required

POSITION DETAILS

Job Title: Adult Sports Official – Adult Hockey Official

Location: Eagle Pool & Ice Rink (Eagle, CO)

Employment Type: Part-Time, Seasonal

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Overtime Eligible)

Schedule: Schedule varies based on sports program and league needs and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours and assignments may fluctuate throughout the year based on seasonal programming.

Supervision Required: Works under the supervision of the Sports & Athletics Coordinators and Sports & Athletics Supervisor 

Supervision Exercised: None. Works independently while officiating assigned games and provides direction to players and team representatives as necessary to enforce league rules, maintain game flow, and support a safe and sportsmanlike environment.


Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Duties are primarily performed in an indoor ice rink environment and include regular exposure to cold temperatures, ice surfaces, noise, and activity associated with adult recreational hockey. The flow of work and character of duties require sustained mental and visual attention, sound judgment, and the ability to observe play and respond quickly to changing game conditions. Physical exertion includes prolonged standing and skating; skating at varying speeds; frequent stopping, starting, turning, and changing direction; use of hand and arm signals; bending and reaching; and the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds unassisted. Job stress may include managing disagreements or conflict, interacting with frustrated or uncooperative participants, exposure to illness or minor injuries, and periods of continuous physical and mental demand.

Salary: $65/game; staff in this position are eligible for a $1/hour incentive for Spanish/English bilingual and can pass the language competency test.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

General Statement of Duties: Officiates adult recreational hockey games and maintains established standards of play by applying and enforcing league and game rules consistently and fairly. Promotes a safe, organized, and sportsmanlike environment for participants while supporting the effective flow of each game. This is a seasonal sports position.


Examples of Duties:

  • Officiates adult recreational hockey games in accordance with established league rules, policies, and procedures; promotes safe, fair, and consistent play. 
  • Observes game play, makes appropriate calls, and communicates decisions clearly and professionally to players, team representatives, scorekeepers, and other officials. 
  • Assesses penalties and addresses rule infractions, disputes, or participant concerns in accordance with established rules and procedures. 
  • Maintains control and appropriate flow of the game while promoting sportsmanship and a positive recreational environment. 
  • Monitors player conduct and responds appropriately to unsafe, disruptive, or unsportsmanlike behavior, including escalating significant concerns or incidents to the appropriate supervisor. 
  • Inspects the playing area and applicable equipment for potential safety concerns before and during games and promptly reports hazards or concerns that cannot be immediately addressed. 
  • Coordinates with scorekeepers, other officials, and program staff as needed to support accurate game administration and successful completion of scheduled games. 
  • Completes accident, incident, game, or other required reports accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • Participates in required Mountain Recreation trainings, meetings, and officiating clinics related to the position. 
  • Follows Mountain Recreation policies, procedures, safety practices, and applicable league rules. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable knowledge of: Playing rules and regulations of specific sport required to do the job and safety guidelines related to assignment.


Skills and abilities: Apply and consistently enforce the rules of adult recreational hockey; exercise sound judgment, initiative, and independent decision-making in a fast-paced environment; demonstrate strong leadership, conflict-management, and problem-solving skills; maintain composure and professionalism during challenging or emotionally charged interactions; communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written form; interact professionally with players, team representatives, officials, staff, and spectators; and establish and maintain positive, respectful, and cooperative relationships with all contacts.


Requirements:

Education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; AND
  • Knowledge of ice hockey rules, game procedures, and safe officiating practices. 
  • Previous hockey playing or officiating experience preferred. 
  • Any satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Certifications

  • Current USA Hockey Officiating Certification/Registration at the level required for assigned games. 
  • Must maintain all applicable USA Hockey officiating requirements throughout the season. 
  • First Aid/CPR certification may be required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire, based on program requirements.
