Overview
Serves as a medical consultant to the business from India for life underwriting, living benefits and claims. Evaluates medical tests/information, assesses risks, and research medical procedures and information. Provides ongoing education and training for underwriters, claims examiners and other medical directors or at industry seminars, as required.
Maintains expert general knowledge of medicine, current developments and research for new product and strategic business initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Medical Underwriting Support
- Provide expert medical opinions on complex and high-value facultative and automatic underwriting cases.
- Review impairments, medical records, laboratory investigations, attending physician statements, and diagnostic reports.
- Assist underwriters in evaluating mortality and morbidity risks.
- Recommend underwriting actions, ratings, exclusions, and alternative risk management approaches.
- Support consistency and quality in medical underwriting decisions across markets.
2. Claims Assessment
- Provide medical consultation on contestable, disability, critical illness, and complex mortality claims.
- Evaluate causation, diagnosis validity, treatment history, and claim eligibility.
- Assist claims teams in resolving medically complex cases.
- Support fraud detection and claims investigations where medical expertise is required.
3. Underwriting Guidelines and Governance
- Contribute to the development and periodic review of underwriting manuals, medical guidelines, and best practices.
- Monitor emerging medical trends and their impact on underwriting philosophies.
- Support internal quality assurance and governance initiatives.
4. Research and Medical Intelligence
- Monitor developments in medicine, epidemiology, healthcare delivery, and public health.
- Analyze emerging health risks and trends affecting insured populations.
- Conduct or support medical research projects relevant to underwriting and claims.
- Develop medical bulletins, articles, and educational materials for internal and external stakeholders.
5. Client and Market Engagement
- Provide medical support during client meetings, underwriting audits, and business reviews.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops for cedants and distribution partners.
- Support relationship management and business development initiatives.
- Represent the company at industry conferences, seminars, and professional forums.
6. Training and Knowledge Sharing
- Deliver medical education programs to underwriting and claims teams.
- Mentor underwriters on medical risk assessment and emerging medical conditions.
- Develop training content on new medical advances and underwriting implications.
- Promote continuous learning and medical excellence within the organization.
Requirements
Education and Experience
Required:
- Medical degree (MBBS, MD, or equivalent) from a recognized institution. Current medical registration/license in good standing.
Preferred:
- Licensed to practice medicine in applicable location
- Subspecialty training (i.e. insurance medicine board certification, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, family practices, etc.)
- 5 + years clinical experience
- Experience in Insurance/Reinsurance underwriting
- Experience in the review of life and living benefits claims.
- Experience in setting underwriting standards, evaluating new procedures and new research developments
Skills and Abilities:
Required:
- Intermediate Word and Excel skills
- Highly advanced clinical skills
- Highly advanced knowledge of ECG’s, Stress Tests, other cardiac tests and other investigations tests that may be associated with the underwriting process.
- Highly advanced knowledge of India market medical practices, trends and research and the ability to apply this knowledge to job and communicate this knowledge to underwriters and management.
- Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills
- Exceptional ability to communicate across various levels of an organization
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to build professional relationships with various departments/stakeholders
- Flexibility to work during extended hours and during weekends/public holidays during peak business periods
