About the Role

Two exciting opportunities are available for enthusiastic and motivated Grade 1 Dietitians to join the Nutrition & Dietetics Department at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. We are currently recruiting for two full-time, fixed-term positions, with one opportunity available until January 2027 and the second until September 2027.

Working as part of an experienced and supportive team, you will provide high-quality Nutrition & Dietetics services across a varied caseload, with opportunities to work across inpatient and outpatient settings. Reporting to the Manager, Nutrition & Dietetics, you will provide evidence-based, patient-centred care while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to support positive patient outcomes. We are looking for Dietitians who bring a flexible and proactive approach, excellent communication and organisational skills, and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality clinical care. Previous experience within a tertiary hospital environment will be highly regarded.

Salary: Dietitian Grade 1 AI1 - AI7 ($64,708.80 - $92,123.20 per annum).

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Provide timely, evidence-based and patient-centred Nutrition & Dietetics assessment and intervention.

• Manage a varied clinical caseload across inpatient and/or outpatient settings.

• Develop and implement appropriate nutrition care plans, including ongoing evaluation and documentation.

• Contribute to multidisciplinary care, including team liaison and discharge planning.

• Participate in multidisciplinary and Nutrition & Dietetics team meetings.

• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.

• Actively participate in the department’s clinical supervision program.

• Contribute to quality improvement and professional development activities within the department.

The Nutrition & Dietetics Department at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne employs more than 30 Dietitians and provides services across acute and subacute care, designated outpatient clinics and Residential Aged Care Facilities. The department is committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based Nutrition & Dietetics care and offers a collaborative environment that supports professional growth and development. The Nutrition & Dietetics Department is also a core clinical placement site for Nutrition and Dietetics students and is actively involved in clinical education, supervision, quality improvement and research.

Position Description

Position Purpose

The Grade 1 Dietitian is responsible for delivering high-quality nutrition services to allocated inpatient units and outpatient clinics. The role may involve working across St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, St George’s Health Service and Residential Care Facilities. Services are delivered to a high clinical standard in an efficient and cost-effective manner, in line with the strategic direction of the Nutrition Department and St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, treat and manage patients throughout the continuum of care in the most appropriate setting based on individual patient needs.

• Provide timely and effective clinical management through assessment, treatment, re-evaluation, documentation, multidisciplinary team liaison and discharge planning.

• Plan and coordinate individual therapeutic meal plans and prescribe enteral formulae and nutritional supplements to support therapeutic goals.

• Facilitate patient education groups and conduct outpatient nutrition clinics as allocated.

• Actively participate in ward rounds, conferences and in-service education within relevant clinical teams.

• Maintain current knowledge and skills in evidence-based clinical dietetic practice.

• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with multidisciplinary teams, referral sources, participating agencies and other service providers.

• Collaborate with Dietitian Assistants and Food Services personnel to provide a high standard of patient care.

• Contribute to the development of staff and students.

• Participate in team meetings and discipline-specific staff meetings.

• Participate in clinical teams, portfolios and working groups as required.

• Contribute to quality improvement and research initiatives, including projects, audits and discipline-related activities.

• Maintain accurate statistics, clinical documentation and data collection in accordance with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Nutrition Department requirements.

Clinical Quality and Safety

The Grade 1 Dietitian will:

• Maintain appropriate clinical registration and any required indemnity cover.

• Work within their approved scope of practice and seek supervision from senior clinical staff where appropriate.

• Take responsibility for the quality and safety of clinical work undertaken.

• Maintain the skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively undertake clinical duties.

• Consult with peers and other healthcare professionals and make appropriate referrals when required.

• Collaborate and communicate effectively with patients, carers and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

• Participate in clinical risk management and continuous quality improvement activities.

• Complete required clinical competencies, orientation and mandatory training.

Person-Centred Care

The Grade 1 Dietitian will:

• Ensure patients receive information in an appropriate and accessible format.

• Support patients to make informed decisions about their treatment and ongoing care.

• Ensure patients are aware of their rights, responsibilities and opportunities to provide feedback.

• Deliver care that is respectful, compassionate and responsive to individual patient needs.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

• Qualifications providing eligibility for full membership with Dietitians Australia (DA) and participation in the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program.

• Sound clinical dietetic skills and the ability to work effectively within a complex healthcare environment.

• Ability to prioritise and organise work effectively as part of a team.

• Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

• Commitment to ongoing professional development and participation in the professional activities of the dietetic profession.

• Commitment to the mission and values of St Vincent’s.

Desirable

• Relevant professional or clinical experience will be highly regarded.

• Current Victorian Driver’s Licence.

About the Nutrition Department

The Nutrition Department provides high-quality Nutrition and Dietetics services across St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, including acute and subacute inpatient services, outpatient services, St George’s Health Service and Residential Care Facilities. The department is also a core clinical placement site for Nutrition and Dietetics students and is actively involved in clinical supervision, education and research.

Health and Safety Requirements

This position is classified as a Category A healthcare worker position. Employees in Category A positions are required to meet St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne’s health screening and immunisation requirements prior to commencement. The successful applicant will also be required to provide a current Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check prior to commencing employment and comply with all relevant St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne policies, procedures and mandatory training requirements.
