FIre & Security Engineer

Summary of role

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Multi-Disciplined Fire & Security Service Engineer to join our Birmingham team, serving clients across the Midlands region. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the service, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), installation, configuration, and technical support of fire alarm systems and integrated security systems, ensuring our clients across the Midlands receive exceptional technical service and system reliability.

You will receive comprehensive training on our range of products through our chosen manufacturers, industry-recognised training courses, and our in-house product training facility, supporting your continuous professional development.

Fire Alarm Systems:

• Conduct servicing, PPM, and technical support on fire alarm systems including addressable and conventional panels across the Midlands region
• Perform routine maintenance, testing, and fault diagnosis on fire detection and alarm systems to ensure compliance with BS5839 standards
• Commission fire alarm systems and carry out statutory inspections and compliance checks
• Respond to emergency callouts and provide reactive maintenance support
• Maintain detailed service records, certification, and compliance documentation

Security Systems:

• Install, configure, and commission integrated security systems including CCTV, access control, intrusion detection, and related technologies
• Perform routine and reactive maintenance on security systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability
• Conduct software updates, hardware upgrades, and comprehensive system diagnostics
• Configure and install remote signalling devices, commission systems, and fully test signalling to Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs)

Other

• Provide expert technical support to clients on fire and security system issues across the Birmingham and Midlands region
• Diagnose and resolve problems remotely or on-site, ensuring customer satisfaction and minimal downtime
• Deliver professional service on planned preventative maintenance (PPM) visits and emergency callouts
• Provide end-user training on the effective operation and maintenance of fire and security systems
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of system configurations, installation procedures, service histories, and troubleshooting activities
• Complete service reports, certification, and compliance documentation promptly and thoroughly
• Keep meticulous records demonstrating attention to detail, quality, and customer service excellence
• Comfortable being part of a team, offering support and encouraging attitude
• Work closely with colleagues, project managers, clients, and suppliers to deliver tailored, integrated solutions
• Participate in on-call rota to provide responsive emergency support
• Provide occasional coverage in other areas within the Midlands region, which may require overnight stays when necessary
• Ensure all work complies with relevant health and safety legislation, industry standards (including BS5839, BS8494), and company policies
• Stay current with emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and best practices in fire and security engineering

What We're Looking For

Fire Systems Experience:

• Proven and demonstrable experience in fire alarm systems maintenance gained over a number of years
• Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of BS5839 standards and their practical application
• Experience servicing and maintaining both addressable and conventional fire alarm systems

Security Systems Experience:

• Proven experience installing, configuring, and maintaining security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection)
• Strong technical competence in networking protocols, hardware installation, and fault diagnosis
• Proficiency in security protocols including TCP/IP, SSL, AES, and relevant signalling standards

General Requirements:

• Full UK Driving Licence (essential)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients, colleagues, and suppliers
• Ability to provide professional service demonstrating meticulous attention to detail, quality, and customer care
• Capable of working independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively as part of a team
• Reliability and punctuality—essential qualities for this role
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Highly Desirable:

• FIA (Fire Industry Association) qualifications or equivalent fire alarm training
• Relevant professional certifications (e.g., ECS/CSCS cards, NSI/SSAIB accreditation, Certified Security Systems Professional, or equivalent)
• Willingness to participate in the on-call rota to support emergency response requirements

• Working Hours: 36.5 hours per week (Monday–Thursday 08:45–16:40, Friday 08:45–16:00)
• On-Call Rota: Currently 1 in 8 weeks, with a £200 standby allowance per week
• Call-Out Payments: Minimum 3 hours paid at applicable overtime rates for the first call-out per occurrence
• Travel Time Compensation: Paid after 1-hour cumulative travel time (e.g., 30 minutes each way)
• Overtime Opportunities: Available by agreement—paid at time and a half (Monday–Saturday) and double time (Sundays and Bank Holidays)
