Utilities Mechanical/Electrical Technician (Wastewater)

Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on electrical and mechanical systems, equipment, and instrumentation as requested through work orders. Position reports to Wastewater Collections Superintendent.

1. Performs corrective and preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on electrical and mechanical systems, equipment, and instrumentation as requested through work orders 
2. Maintains a variety of operational and maintenance logs, reports, parts inventory and other forms using designated computer programs 
3. Disassembles, rebuilds and reassembles motors, valves, pumps, gearboxes, etc., to rehabilitate and repair equipment; evaluates the operation of equipment after rebuilding for proper operations
4. Performs electrical work including but not limited to connecting and disconnecting wires and performs all corrective and preventive maintenance on building electrical supply circuits
5. Monitors and maintains SCADA equipment that is assigned to the wastewater collections system ie floats, transducers and wiring. 
6. Requests the purchase of parts, equipment and services needed to perform repairs 
7. Operates and maintains motor vehicles, generators, construction and lawn maintenance equipment 
8. Responds to emergency and customer complaint calls, which includes standby duty.
9. Performs minor welding and cutting work to complete repairs and fabricate parts for bracing and repairs as required 
10. Perform duties as an operator when required to include station checks and standby 
11. Perform standby duties on a rotational basis.
12. Performs any other duties or assignments that are determined to be necessary for continuous and safe operation of MetCom’s facilities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.):

1. Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures
2. Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public
3. Expert knowledge of relevant maintenance and repair practices and procedures as they relate to electrical and mechanical systems, equipment, and instrumentation
4. Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for ensuring safety
5. Ability to effectively communicate with other staff members
6. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records
7. Ability to wear appropriate PPE for confined space entry, including respiratory gear

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.):

Training and/or Education:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and three years or more experience working on mechanical, electrical and instrumentation systems

Experience:

Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience

Licenses or Certificates:

1. Wastewater Collections 2 Certification
2. Class B Maryland CDL Driver’s License with Tanker and Airbrake Endorsements

Physical Demands:

Work demands occasional strenuous effort. For example, handling moderately heavy tools, equipment or materials of 30 to 60 pounds or more. 

Unusual Demands:

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress, which requires a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined workspace, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
