Description
Work for the IMF. Work for the World.
Typically Reports to: Deputy Division Chief
MCD has an opening for an economist / senior economist to work on Oman. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain exposure to a surveillance country within a highly dynamic and policy relevant context.
Oman’s economic fundamentals have improved significantly over the past few years amid substantial progress in implementing a broad-based reform agenda, but more remains to be done, primarily with respect to economic diversification and job creation. Hydrocarbon resources are projected to run out in the next few decades, necessitating stepped-up efforts to promote private sector-led diversification of the economy. Discussions with the authorities center around maintaining fiscal discipline to ensure intergenerational equity and fiscal sustainability, modernizing the monetary policy framework, and accelerating economic transformation including addressing the large footprint of the public sector. Moreover, Oman’s economy has thus far shown resilience to the conflict in the region, supported by its location and continued prudent policies. Deepening and accelerating structural reforms remain the main policy priority.
The selected candidate will be expected to be involved in all aspects of the work, including conducting macroeconomic analysis; coordinating the macro-framework, drafting of reports; and attending to all other desk responsibilities, including review work, action items and requests, and liaising with other departments and stakeholders, among others. S/he will also be expected to contribute to the work of the division, including analytical work on topics relevant to the GCC, preparation of briefing books for management visits to the region, and reviewing departmental and Fund papers. The selected candidate will also have opportunities to engage in MCD policy groups and contribute to broader analytical and policy work within the department. Division D covers the following GCC countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Interested candidates are encouraged to reach out to Abdullah AlHassan ([email protected]), for further information.
Minimum Qualifications
In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards, the successful candidate(s) should have proven analytical and drafting skills; sound judgement; versatile operational experience with Fund policy advice; strong knowledge of Fund policies and procedures; attention to detail; solid organizational and planning skills and adaptability to meet tight deadlines and carry a substantial workload. Strong interpersonal, communications, and diplomatic skills are necessary given the range of stakeholders involved, including to foster good relations with the authorities and to work collaboratively in a team environment and across the Fund.
A regular staff member who is selected to fill the vacancy will maintain their open-ended status. Staff members already on a term appointment will continue their current term but may receive an extension provided that their current term appointment has not already been extended.
