JOB SUMMARY

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, reads water consumption meters and records volume used by residential and commercial consumers to ensure accurate water billing accounts and re-sequence accounts as required. Will perform additional duties under direct supervision which include performing repairs and preventative of all water and wastewater infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to, water mains, water services, water taps, fire hydrants, valves, sewer mains, sewer services, manholes, and cleanouts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to drive trucks and walk over assigned established route and record readings of water meters.

  • Inspects AMI and meter connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections. 

  • Records any meter conditions such as pulled, covered, etc.

  • Records meter readings, identifies illegal connections or irregularities for necessary action by servicing department.

  • Cleans out flooded and buried meters and inspects service lines/connections for water leakage.

  • Ability to assist in the repair, replacement, or adjustment all sized meters in the infrastructure. Replaces broken meter box lids a needed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to assist in the performance of meter accuracy testing, pressure flow testing, and the installation and repair of meter vaults.

  • Makes observations to ensure compliance with utility regulations.

  • Performs related duties such as completing paperwork daily, reporting any additional information and preparing weekly vehicle maintenance report as necessary.

  • Operates assigned vehicle and is responsible for general care during hours of operation.

  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor, including responding to after-hours emergencies as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Skill with organization and attention to detail.

  • Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.

  • Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.

  • Skill in communicating effectively orally with other City employees and citizens.

  • Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.

  • kneeling and stooping 400-500 times a day.

  • Ability to work within a set schedule.

  • Ability to work independently under general instructions.

  • Ability to work independent of close supervision.

  • Ability to work in an out-of-door environment subject to changing weather conditions and hazards such as animal or insect bites.

  • Ability to walk long distances.

  • Ability to understand mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals.

  • Ability to read gauges and record figures accurately.

  • Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.

  • Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.

  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.

  • Ability to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time including walking 6-8 hours a day and bending,

  • Ability to lift or exert forces up to 100 pounds.

  • Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma. Six (6) months outside work experience desired. 

  • Prefer six (6) months experience in a similar job with a utility company.

  • Valid Texas Driver's License, Class C.

  •  Pre-employment criminal background, physical and drug/alcohol testing, motor vehicle check required.

  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a Class D Water Operator’s License within the six-month probationary period.
