Description

The Town of Marana is seeking a Judge Pro Tempore to work in the Magistrate Court Department. The ideal individual should have a strong sense of public service, high level of civic responsibility, the ability to evaluate facts and legal arguments fairly and impartially, excellent people skills, and the ability to work well with current staff. This position serves on an intermittent, on-call, as-needed basis with no guaranteed minimum number of hours. 

Compensation: $250 for 1/2 day session and $450 for full day sessions.  For two day jury trial, $1000 and additional $100/hour if past 5:00 PM or into third day.   If scheduled to cover court, and there is cancellation, a $100 fee for ½ day and $200 fee for Full Day.  On-call phone assistance for a day receives $100.

The duties of this position include presiding over all phases of a broad range of misdemeanor criminal, civil traffic, and Town Code violation cases, as well as civil orders of protection and injunctions against harassment.

Persons applying as part-time judges pro tempore shall be at least 30 years of age, of good moral character, and admitted to practice law in and a resident of the State of Arizona for the five years immediately preceding appointment as a judge pro tempore, as required by article 6, § 31 of the Arizona constitution. Additionally, applicants shall have at least five years of courtroom experience as an attorney or five years of experience as a judicial or hearing officer, or a combination thereof totaling five years’ experience. All potential candidates must familiarize themselves with the ethical restrictions on the practice of law while serving as a special judicial officer, located in the Arizona Code of Judicial Conduct, which can be found here:

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Applications will be reviewed by the Court Administrator to determine whether applicants meet the minimum qualifications to serve as part-time judge pro tempore. Applications will then be forwarded to the Town Magistrate for review and recommendation to the Town Council as to which applicants are best suited for appointment as part-time judges pro tempore.

Job posting will remain open until a sufficient number of applicants have met the minimum requirements.  A first review date of applications will be conducted on 09/08/2026.
