About the Role
We are looking for a strong Mainframe COBOL professional to lead development and support for our banking application. The ideal candidate will combine hands-on coding expertise with technical leadership, ensuring reliable delivery, production stability, and modernization readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Lead design, development, and enhancement of Mainframe COBOL applications. Own end-to-end delivery across requirements analysis, technical design, coding, testing, deployment, and post-production support. Drive technical decisions for batch and online processing, file handling, and performance tuning. Work on VSAM file structures, DB2 integration, JCL, and job scheduling workflows. Review code and enforce development standards, quality controls, and secure coding practices. Perform and lead QA testing activities including unit testing, integration testing, UAT coordination, and regression testing. Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive fixes. Collaborate with business, QA, infrastructure, and cross-functional teams for release planning and execution. Mentor junior developers and guide the team on best practices, estimations, and technical problem-solving. Support migration and modernization initiatives. Maintain technical documentation including design notes, runbooks, and operational procedures.
Required Technical Skills
Strong hands-on experience in COBOL on IBM Mainframe.
Good experience with JCL, VSAM, and DB2. Working knowledge of CICS and batch processing patterns.
Experience with file processing, sort utilities, and high-volume transaction systems. Hands-on QA testing experience: test case design, test automation, defect tracking, and quality frameworks (e.g., functional, regression, performance testing). Familiarity with Mainframe debugging and analysis tools (for example, Abend-AID, File-AID, ISPW/Endevor/Changeman or similar). Exposure to SOAP & REST API enablement or integration with distributed systems. Good understanding of production support, incident handling, and SLA-driven operations. Exposure to version control and release/change management processes.
Preferred Skills
Experience in financial services, payments, or enterprise transaction-heavy applications. Experience in data migration projects, especially VSAM to DB2 transitions. Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and tools; exposure to AI-driven code analysis, automation, or predictive analytics in Mainframe environments. Experience with test automation tools or frameworks applicable. Knowledge of performance tuning, SQL optimization, and batch window reduction strategies.
Leadership and Soft Skills
Proven ability to lead a small technical team and drive delivery ownership. Strong analytical and problem-solving capability. Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
What Success Looks Like in This Role
Stable and high-quality releases with minimal production defects. Faster issue resolution and reduced recurring incidents. Improved code quality, documentation standards, and team productivity. Tangible progress in modernization and optimization initiatives. Effective QA leadership that reduces escaped defects and improves release quality.
