The Institution

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. As South Carolina's only comprehensive academic health science center, providing a full range of programs in the biomedical sciences and a research portfolio totaling $349M, MUSC is engaged in health care statewide and is recognized nationally for excellence in interprofessional education.

The Division of Cardiovascular Perfusion (CVP) is housed within the Department of Clinical Sciences of the College of Health Professions, which is recognized for extensive integration of technology, simulation, and interprofessional education into its outstanding educational programs. The CVP mission is to prepare competent and compassionate clinical perfusionists who are dedicated to quality patient care, employing best practice methods, interprofessional collaboration, and outcomes research.  Our faculty and staff seek to improve the health of populations by developing and inspiring health scientists and leaders.

Position Description

We are seeking a motivated, forward-thinking Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) who has demonstrated skills in leadership, perfusion education, and clinical practice for a full-time position with MUSC. The position includes opportunities for clinical practice, teaching, scholarship, and student advising. All perfusion faculty contribute to the division’s mission of preparing “competent and compassionate clinical perfusionists who are dedicated to quality patient care, employing best practice methods, interprofessional collaboration, and outcomes research”.Academic rank is commensurate with credentials and experience. This role will be performed primarily in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. There may be some opportunities for remote work at the discretion of the Division Director and System Chief.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active certification from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
  • Ability to exercise safe patient care in all perfusion-related therapies, including but not limited to, cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, transplant surgeries, robotic surgeries, HIPEC, and TAVR.
  • Preparation in the basic and clinical sciences relevant to perfusion practice
  • Knowledge of clinical practice and professional issues
  • Master’s degree

Preferred Qualifications

The most competitive candidates will have some or all of the following:

  • A record of expertise in clinical and/or didactic education
  • Experience in high-fidelity simulation, curriculum development, academic scholarship, and professional association involvement
  • Experience as a clinical preceptor

Reporting

This will be a shared role between the College of Health Professions (40%) and the University Hospital Authority (60%). As it pertains to academic responsibilities, faculty report to the CVP Division Director. As it pertains to clinical responsibilities, faculty report to the System Chief of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Performance evaluations will be completed with input from both leaders.

Principle Job Duties

Clinical:

  • Perform the principal duties of a staff perfusionist under the direction and guidance of the chief perfusionist.
  • Maintain certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion by performing the required clinical and professional duties.
  • Organize, monitor, and maintain records for the continuing education and competency evaluations for the clinical perfusion staff.
  • In collaboration with leadership, work toward the essential tenets of obtaining the AmSECT Pillar Award for the perfusion team. Criteria for the award include:
    • Organized orientation and training
    • QA/QI process
    • Continuing education and performance evaluation
    • Development of institutional protocols and adherence to AmSECT Standards and Guidelines
    • Employee education
    • Commitment to the field of perfusion

 

Academic:

  • Work enthusiastically toward continual improvement of the division, the program, and the profession by providing input and taking initiative.
  • Contribute to student instruction as course director and instructor for assigned courses.
  • Participate in and lead high-fidelity simulation activities as assigned.
  • Participate in scholarly work including mentorship of student research, participation at professional conferences, and contributions to peer-reviewed publications.
