About the Role:

About the Role

The Associate Publisher is responsible for the strategic and operational management of a portfolio of Physical Sciences and Engineering journals, including both partnership titles and proprietary journals. Working closely with Editors-in-Chief, editorial boards, society partners, internal publishing teams, and external stakeholders, the Associate Publisher will drive journal growth, enhance editorial quality and author experience, strengthen partner relationships, and deliver sustainable business performance. The role requires a combination of portfolio strategy, stakeholder management, publishing expertise, and data-driven decision-making to ensure the long-term success and competitiveness of the journal portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Strategy and Performance Management

• Develop and execute growth strategies for a portfolio of Physical Sciences and Engineering journals, spanning both proprietary and partnership titles.
• Monitor key performance indicators and implement initiatives to improve submissions, publication output, impact, readership, and Open Access growth.

Partnership and Stakeholder Management

• Act as the primary publishing contact for society partners, academic institutions, Editors-in-Chief, and editorial boards.
• Build strong relationships, lead regular performance reviews, and ensure effective collaboration with key stakeholders.

Editorial Leadership and Journal Development

• Work with editorial leaders and internal teams to define journal strategies and recruit and develop editorial board members.
• Identify opportunities for journal enhancement, new initiatives, and portfolio expansion.

Cross-Functional Publishing Operations

• Collaborate with editorial, production, marketing, research integrity, and commercial teams to ensure efficient journal operations.
• Ensure compliance with publishing standards and an excellent author experience.

What We're Looking For

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree a plus.
• 3+ years of relevant experience.

Skills & Knowledge

• Knowledgeable about journal publishing and able to articulate an organization's broader publishing strategy.
• General awareness of commercial trends in publishing.
• Strong written communication and presentation skills.
• Highly organized and numerate.
• Ability to explain research and research publishing concepts clearly, including to non-specialist audiences.
• Understanding of major industry trends and their impact on publishers and partners.
• Skilled at collaborating with colleagues to secure buy-in from external partners for strategic changes.
• Intermediate proficiency in MS Office.

It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall within the range, however the ultimate salary offered for this role may be higher or lower and will be set based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
