About The Organization

Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.

Work within one of Disney’s service engineering teams, supporting a variety of backend API services that directly support the Disney+ platform as part of the Growth, Commerce and Identity group.  The Billing and Subscription teams are responsible for building and maintaining our Subscriptions, Entitlements, Orders, Invoices and Billing systems which must be scaled to handle high-traffic events like ESPN+ Pay Per Views while also processing the recurring billing cycles for millions of subscribers daily – all while managing the security and reliability of our homegrown systems. 

As we build out our flexible architecture, the critical contributions of this team will enable our finance/marketing teams to fulfill their vision of growing our subscriber base internationally. Our billing solutions span retail, wholesale and third-party channels and you will collaborate closely with your peers to deliver a world-class solution that processes millions of transactions every day. Job Summary:

As Lead Software Engineer, you will write and review code, provide guidance on technical decisions, and mentor engineers in your squad. You will contribute to and be part of an engaging, dynamic and inclusive engineering organization.

Senior Software Engineers are empowered to help make important architectural decisions, and to influence a roadmap of future changes working in partnership with your local leader, your squad, and your peers across Product, Project Management and Engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of stateful microservices and lambdas in a multi-region cloud environment.
  • Use Agile methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban, and Scrumban to plan day-to-day activities and drive continuous improvement over time.
  • Mentor engineers within your squad (and beyond!) to help them improve their technical ability and build their profile within and outside of the organization.
  • Collaborate with your squad, Product Managers, Designers, QA, Operations, and other partners to understand requirements and articulate technical decisions and outcomes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Familiarity with CI/CD methodologies and tooling, inc. Terraform Enterprise, Github Enterprise, Spinnaker, Jenkins.
  • Experience with one of these Java Virtual Machine (JVM) languages: Java, Scala, or Kotlin.
  • Familiarity with a cloud provider: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Compute (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.
  • Broad AWS Service knowledge, (inc. Kubernetes/EKS, KMS plus IAM Roles and Policy creation and management inc. Cross-account permissioning and ABAC-based rule creation).
  • Operational awareness of the deployment and operation of data streaming and event-driven services such as Kinesis, DynamoDB and Lambda at scale.
  • Familiarity with Monitoring and operations tools such as PagerDuty, CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry (OTEL), Grafana and DataDog.
  • Ability to trace through various services and determine root cause when issues occur.
  • Knowledge of common performance issues, as well as a working experience with logs, monitoring tools
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and a strong teamwork ethic
  • Capacity to guide medium- to large-sized projects and platform initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with both object oriented programming (OOP), and functional programming (FP) standard methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Terraform, and infrastructure as code (IaC), and DevOps.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Terraform, and infrastructure as code (IaC) best practices.
  • Familiarity with Data Engineering, Data Architecture & Infrastructure and Test Engineering

Experience with:

  • 5+ years of engineering experience.
  • Experience in building and delivering high-quality, reliable, and scalable features for consumer-facing products.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing and experimentation-driven development.
  • Strong programming skills in Java or Scala.
  • Familiarity with distributed applications on AWS.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
