Energy Market Risk Analyst | Brisbane, QLD

• Join Rio Tinto Aluminium as we enter the Queensland energy market and help build an in-house capability at a scale rarely seen in Australia.

• Develop the risk frameworks, controls and market oversight capability that will support disciplined participation in Australia's evolving energy markets.

• Brisbane-based opportunity with significant influence across Trading, Risk, Finance and Technology stakeholders.

We're Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the Role

This is a rare opportunity to help shape Rio Tinto's next chapter in Australia's energy market.

As Rio Tinto continues to build its in-house energy market capability, we are looking for an experienced Energy Market Risk Analyst to help establish and operate the risk frameworks, controls and analytical capabilities that will support our growing electricity and environmental product portfolio.

Working at the intersection of Energy Trading, Risk, Finance and Technology, you'll play a key role in building a new capability from the ground up, developing the risk systems, methodologies and insights that will support Rio Tinto's participation in Australian energy markets for years to come.

If you're motivated by the opportunity to help shape a new capability, solve complex challenges and leave a lasting legacy, this role offers the chance to make a visible impact on a strategically important business initiative.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Lead the development of Rio Tinto's in-house energy market risk capability, including frameworks, systems, controls and reporting.
  • Analyse and monitor market, credit and liquidity risks across electricity, derivative and environmental product portfolios.
  • Develop risk models, scenario analysis and stress testing to support commercial and strategic decision-making.
  • Partner with Trading, Risk, Finance, Treasury and Technology teams to provide independent risk insight, challenge and governance.
  • Monitor exposures, limits and key risk indicators to support effective portfolio oversight and risk management.
  • Drive continuous improvement, automation and innovation across risk systems, analytics and reporting capabilities.

About You

We're looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every "helpful for success" item to apply. If you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

Safety focus: A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.

Skills and Capabilities: Ability to develop and implement energy market risk frameworks, quantitative methodologies and governance processes that support informed commercial decision-making.

Experience: Significant experience in market risk, quantitative risk, middle office, energy trading analytics or a related role within a generator, retailer, trader, financial institution, market participant or large energy user.

Qualifications: Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent industry experience in energy markets, finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, data science or a related discipline.

Market Knowledge: Strong practical understanding of the National Electricity Market (NEM), including spot market dynamics, pricing drivers, electricity derivatives and physical and financial portfolio exposures.

Systems: Experience with risk systems, analytics platforms and reporting tools, including advanced Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI or similar technologies used to analyse complex energy market datasets. [

Experience developing and applying quantitative risk methodologies such as mark-to-market valuation, scenario analysis, stress testing, earnings-at-risk or cash-flow-at-risk.

Exposure to PPAs, electricity derivatives, environmental products or broader energy trading activities.

Experience implementing or materially improving risk systems, controls, governance frameworks or reporting processes.

Ability to communicate complex risk concepts, quantitative analysis and model outputs to technical, commercial and senior stakeholders.

What We Offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you've helped the world progress.
