COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE
Our Mission is to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.

Area 9 exists to perform wildlife management, wildlife education, law enforcement, public service duties in the north-central portion of Colorado in Grand, Summit, Eagle and Routt Counties. The work unit also manages the State Wildlife Areas in the same geographic area to provide wildlife habitat and wildlife recreational opportunities. The Area Wildlife Manager (AWM), Assistant Area Wildlife Manager (AAWM), District Wildlife Managers (DWM), Wildlife Technician (WT), Customer Service Representatives (CSR), Administrative Assistants (AA) and Biologists (Bio) perform the work within Area 9 to provide these services to the public.

In collaboration with the existing Wildlife Property Technician, this position shares responsibility for managing 19,000 acres of State Wildlife Areas within Area 9. This includes co-overseeing the operations and maintenance of the Hot Sulphur Springs Service Center, three employee residences, three shops, one bunkhouse, one shooting range, and
various outbuildings. Additionally, this position’s primary role is overseeing approximately 12,000 acres of the Radium State Wildlife Area, including residing at the Radium house and maintaining it.

Habitat Management

Enhances and improves wildlife habitat on SWAs utilizing various tools such as mechanical tree mastication, hand clearing of trees, prescribed burns, noxious weed treatment, tillage and spring/water development. Inspect signage and fences and ensure that minimum standards for properties are being met.

Develop multi-year plans for habitat projects in coordination with AWM, AAWM, DWMs and Biologists. Develop relationships with key stakeholders and neighboring landowners. Procure funding for habitat projects through the use of grants, both internal and external. Utilize grant funds for habitat enhancement projects on SWA’s. Participate in the State bid process to engage vendors for habitat projects.

Water Management

Fully utilizes all water rights owned by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Reports and records all use of water rights. Improves and maintains all infrastructure associated with water rights. 


Equipment and Facilities Management
Procurement, repair and maintenance of all NWRSC structures, facilities and equipment, including the Hunter Education building, indoor shooting range, 3 separate office buildings, storage yards/structures/buildings, utility services (i.e. water, sewer, cameras, electricity, EV stations, etc.). Maintenance of landscaping, lawns, shelters and snow removal at the NWRSC.

Administrative Functions
Monitor expenses, track budget, make purchasing decisions, prepare reports, develop work plans, apply for and administer grant applications, coordinate projects with AWM, DWMs, Bios, renew leases, coordinate with CSR’s and function as front desk help during busy periods. Recruit, hire and support temporary workers and volunteers.


Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Four (4) years of relevant experience in agriculture management, natural resource management, facility/building operations, grounds management. construction management or an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. You must adequately demonstrate your experience in your application as it relates to the duties of this position. No formal college education is required.
OR
A combination of related education in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Biology, Aquatic Biology/Fishery Science/Aquaculture/Fishery Management, Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Outdoor Recreation, Zoology/Animal Sciences, Engineering, P.E / Professional Engineer, Water resources planning or management, Program Management/Project Management, Agricultural Sciences and/or relevant experience in agriculture management, natural resource management, facility/building operations, grounds management. construction management equal to four (4) years.

Substitutions

Appropriate education in construction or project management, natural resources, environmental science, recreation management, business or a related field of study will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or former State experience relevant to the position.  
  • Current or former CPW work or volunteer experience.  
  • Experience with agricultural practices and associated machinery/tools.  
  • Experience with irrigation and reporting water use.
  • Knowledge of noxious weeds and spraying.  
  • A commercial driver's license or ability to obtain one.
  • Haying/Grazing Experience.
Required Competencies
  •  Property Management Skills. 
  • Strong level of written and oral communication skills.  
  • Ability to use and operate computers/e-mail/spreadsheets/associated technology.
  • Ability to run and maintain machinery and equipment.  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.  
  • Equipment/Property Maintenance Background.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be willing and able to possess or obtain Colorado Department of Agriculture Qualified Supervisor License for Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials. Position requires use of pesticides and fuel application of pesticides. CPW will pay for this certification and requires it shortly after hiring.

    • This position will require but is not limited to the handling of pesticides, fertilizer, equipment batteries, gasoline, diesel, paint, and motor oil.
  • Position will be required to work some weekends and long/odd hours.
  • Occasional travel and overnight stays are required for training, etc.
  • Use of Firearms or Other Weapons – May be required to assist other Area officers, and dispatch injured wildlife
  • Experience operating tools, OHVs, heavy equipment, tractor, etc.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify their application from the current position.  (Please Note: Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with DNR).
  • Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle. 

    To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who: 

    • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

    • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

    • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
