The City of Bozeman is looking for a skilled and dependable Police Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair a diverse fleet of police vehicles and specialized equipment from patrol cars and SUVs to motorcycles and specialty units. Work Week: Typically Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional after hours and emergency response.
Start Date: Immediately upon completion of background screening.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Schedules, coordinates, and performs routine preventative maintenance and complex repairs of police fleet vehicles (patrol cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and specialty units) including engines, transmissions, brakes, pneumatic, and electrical systems to ensure vehicles meet operational and regulatory standards.
  • Conducts comprehensive diagnostics, overhauls, and rebuilds of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and rear axle assemblies.
  • Maintains onboard electrical systems, battery systems, and charging components.
  • Conducts maintenance and repairs of aftertreatment systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs emergency equipment including lights, sirens, radios, in-car camera systems, mobile data terminals, radar units, weapon racks, divider cages, and other equipment.
  • Responds to emergency breakdowns in the field to diagnose and perform emergency repairs and minimize downtime.
  • Performs fleet maintenance including interior and exterior cleaning and maintaining decals and lettering.
  • Schedules the repair of body damage to any police vehicle.
  • Troubleshoots electronic systems on vehicles and equipment using computerized diagnostic equipment, tools, and software.
  • Reads and interprets manuals, drawings, and specifications as required.
  • Provides technical guidance to City employees on proper vehicle use and basic preventative care.
  • Provides technical assistance to other mechanics as necessary.
  • Observes safe work methods and utilizes related safety equipment as required.
  • Operates a variety of shop tools and equipment such as lifts, diagnostic tools, welders, hydraulic presses safely and effectively.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records and reports of all completed work including inspections, maintenance, repairs, part inventory, etc.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the work day.
  • Utilizes a City vehicle to perform general work of the division.
  • Works closely with vehicle manufacturers and other repair facilities to verify and arrange warranty and other specific repairs, as needed.
  • Supervises installations of equipment in new vehicles and verifies that contractors perform work according to expected standards.
  • Operates motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes.
  • Operates power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work including jacks, vehicle hoists, hydraulic lifts, air tools, electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, welders, drills, metal lathe, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles.
  • Operates a computer, calculator, phone system, and mobile or portable radios.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, and
  • At least 3 years of experience in vehicle maintenance service and repair of electrical systems, or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

    • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and must obtain a Montana Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.
    • Must obtain a Certified Forklift Operator certification within 60 days of employment.
    • Must obtain CJIN mobile certification within 180 days of employment.
    • Must obtain ASE Master Certified Automobile Technician certification and A9 – Light Vehicle Diesel Engine certification within 12 months of employment and maintain through recertification.
    • Must obtain Law Enforcement Vehicle Technician EVTCC Certification within 12 months of employment and maintain through recertification.

Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory completion of the conditional offer process including, but not limited to a criminal background check, a driving record history, thorough reference checks, general internet search, a pre-employment medical examination, and drug testing.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the overall functions, duties, and responsibilities of assigned Departments/division. 
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of and maintenance of related hand and power tools and other related equipment.
  • Knowledge of related safety regulations and work methods.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic welding techniques and safety practices.
  • Ability to effectively repair gas and diesel vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to effectively operate and interpret results of computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot vehicles and equipment and make necessary repairs as required.
  • Ability to appropriately handle information which is sometimes confidential in nature.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
